Best Mexican food place I have ever been to. I eat a lot of Mexican food. My girlfriend does as well. She's also from Guadalajara and grew up eating Mexican food all over the Bay Area. We can't think of a better Mexican food place that we've ever been to. We've gone there probably 4 times the last couple months, last time being on my birthday.
The meat is incredible, drinks are great, service is fast. Only downside is it is usually packed but that comes with being such a great restaurant.
I'm writing this review while eating at pretty crappy restaurant that was more expensive than don pistos. So hard to meet my high standards now.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Michael M.Danville, CA36140Mar 13, 2022
Very Friendly staff. Ceviche and the Salad was worth it!!
Waitress that helped us was friendly professional and knowledgable about the menu. My only pepeeve and it is not there fault at all is the prices for Mex food. I am sure the lobster plate there is amazing but would not be my first choice coming to a place to eat Mex food.
Ps- Tacos were great and would highly recommend the pastor they did it right on the street tacos. I would recommend this spot as a good first date spot for all you online datersHelpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Mansi S.San Francisco, CA107310092Jan 17, 2022
Honestly really enjoyed the food here! I came on a weekend for outdoor dining and was able to get a table without any wait.
The chips and salsa were really great, I actually really enjoyed the salsa they gave as it had a bit of kick to it. I got the chile verde enchiladas, they were really great! I ended up asking for extra jalapeños to make it spicier, and with those it ended up being perfect! :)Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 17270579Apr 7, 2021
Woody, covered and comfy outdoor dining, big fat crunchy quesadillas in all kinds of flavor and passersby on the not-as-busy Union St, Don Pistos is a simple way to spend an afternoon and get on some mex munchies.
I opted for the squash quesadilla, which was a lot of portion, so better walk it off with a couple loops of North beach downtown. The tortillas was perfectly done, not too soggy, not too charred. I felt the cheese was overflowing a bit, but then it's a quesadilla. Wouldn't mind a half-cheese/half-beans option though.
The accompanying sauces were the routine salsa roja, salsa verde and sour cream. They were not too spicy though, i'm rather accustomed to the habanero and jalapeno fires of taquerias.
I was glad to see the use of no plastic/single-use cutlery for the accompaniments and food, which is tricky to pull off in the current circumstances but kudos to them for doing that.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - May 11, 2019
My son had recently found Don Pistos and had already been there twice, so when I was visiting San Francisco he brought me here. It's a casual atmosphere and Mackenzie, our waitress was friendly and knowledgeable. We did a bunch of plates to share, starting with Street Corn (tasty and not overly spiced), empañadas (so good!), fish tacos (grilled Halibut, fantastic), guacamole (creamy and really good), a side of beans and bean soup (my son had those and enjoyed them.
There's a limited bar, mostly wine with some cocktails. The rioja was very good. All in all a very nice dinner.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Paul C.Atlanta, GA212Dec 2, 2022
Some original twists on traditional dishes and a great alternative to the ridiculous wait times many Italian restaurants in North Beach put you through.

Amongst all these Italian restaurants is this gem.
My friends kept asking me to go here but due to hard to find parking I always said no.
But I actually found a good parking spot so I guess this was meant to be.
Salmon tostas were full of salmon, rawish salmon like would get in sushi or lox on a bagel. Great flavor and filling for a small appetizer.
Ceviche with scallops and prawns was marinated well with traces of lemon and lime. Fresh seafood at it's best.
Tortilla soup was one of the best I've ever had. EVERY scoop had something on it. Chunks of chicken and avocado they didn't skimp on this soup at all.
Al pastor tacos were great. Man, wish this place had better parking because then I'd be here more often.Helpful 7Thanks 0Love this 10Oh no 0Business owner information

I've heard good things about Don Pistos and was really excited to come for bottomless mimosas and brunch. Our group had a Saturday morning reservation. The menu was the perfect size where you're not overwhelmed with choice paralysis, but just big enough where there is a variety to choose from. Chips and salsa came with the table and we ordered guacamole on top of it. For my entree, I went with a steak burrito and it tasted great. The portions were big because the burrito was about 2 meals.

Food is amazing! I like all of their tacos, although my favorites are the carnitas and the shrimp tacos! Also amazing is the lobster, the hamburger and the various side dishes. We used to live in the neighborhood and have been going there for years and it is always fun and delicious!
