Mel-O-Cream Donuts

Mel-O-Cream had a bad run a few years back, but they have gotten their S- - - together and are back with a vengeance. Theses are classic donuts done right. Their Glazed Old Fashion is about as perfect as a donut can get.

Best donuts anywhere in town! Don't drive all the way to other stores and wait to know when donuts are done, Mel-O-Cream is perfect all day!

Every time I visit our Springfield office, they have donuts and coffee waiting on us. I love it. Thought about eating these while on the Amtrak headed to Springfield. Delish!!!

Deeply disappointed. Stopped in today for a chocolate iced cream filled. It was dry and quite obviously not fresh. In fact, I have had day old donuts that were fresher. The icing on top was even flaking off, it was so dried out.
If this is what Mel-O-Cream has become I will find other options. Shame on them.

I like the concept of this local donut chain with a long history of being in Springfield -- I'm temporally residing in Springfield and have stopped in a few times on my way to work when I have a morning sweet tooth.

The staff is always friendly and the donuts are pretty good...Better than Krispy Kreme (which are always greasy), yet not as good as Duncan. But it's a local business and the mom and pop shops will always get my patronage over some big commercial national chain. My favorites are the chocolate covered cake donuts. Their cake donuts are in my opinion better than the yeast glazed donuts. The chocolate covered yeast donut is just fine. Maybe I just like the chocolate frosting, it tasted homemade and was just about perfect. It would have been five stars but I really don't like the coffee - I prefer a little more of a robust and darker blend, but it is palatable standard donut shop coffee. I recommend this donut shop for the nice folks working behind the counter and chocolate covered anything they have in the old-school glass fronted display counters.

If you are in Springfield and need donuts, well, this is THE place. They have history behind them, have been around since the 30's, enough said..If a place can stay in business for 5 years, it is usually pretty good. This place has been here for generations now.

Wasn't wild about the coffee I had, it was lacking flavor. But the donuts were good. The staff was super nice, and despite a small crowd, the line moved fast.

We love doughnuts and it's hard to find good ones, so Mel-o-Cream was a find! The old fashioned was crisp on the outside and moist inside, just the way it should be, with a glaze that isn't too sweet. Caramel longjohn- yum! And the glaze is made there, not out of a purchased tub. Try it, you'll like it.

This place has been around forever! I am not from here and I wanted to bring doughnuts to a customer. You know it has to be good if its right next to a dunkin doughnuts and stays in biz. You can tell there were a ton of locals in the place. The staff was nice and quick and the prices were good.
I wish my cinnamon roll was larger but I am just being a pain!

The original Mel-O-Cream of Springfield, many generations of my family have got doughnuts from here for over 50 years. I definitely suggest making this a stop on any trip through or to Springfield. Especially while you're on the Northside next to the original. By the way ask for the Blueberry Fritter

Mel-O-Cream has pretty much kept Krispy Kream and all other competitors out of town. This is not just the blind faith of tradition that gets Saputo's its high ratings. Mel-O-Cream deserves 6 or 7 stars.

Honestly, I grew up on Mel-O-Cream. There is a location 2 blocks from my house and I pass it whenever I go somewhere. I have been spoiled. I cannot consume any other donut because it simply would not measure up.

They have tons of variety. There are dozens of donuts to choose from. Despite the abundant choices, you can't go wrong with the humble glazed donut. It is light as it needs to be, but unlike Krispy Kream, you actually feel like you are something after two or three Mel-O-Cream donuts. I prefer the Chocolate Old Fashion.

To get an idea of how good this place is here's a little anecdote: My godfather grew up in Springfield. He moved to Texas. Every time he comes home, he'll get several dozen donuts of all varieties to share with his coworkers. Needless to say, his Mel-O-Cream supply rarely lasts more than a few minutes.
