Oh my! I love the Feed Store. It is definitely a Springfield landmark. I have been frequenting this place since we moved to Springfield when I was 13 and my mom has been coming here since she was in high school.

I would argue this is THE place to go for lunch downtown. They are only open for lunch, M-S, but it always packed during this time. My personal favorites are the chicken salad on a croissant, the prairie turkey on french, the bagel with veggie cream cheese and the lox bagel. Yum! All of these are amazing. Everything is made fresh-the bread, the veggie cream cheese, the chicken salad-which is oh my god good. It is the creamiest I have ever had. It's more than likely insanely bad for you-but oh well, it is worth it once in a while. Their soups are a must. I love the cream of broccoli, wisconsin cheddar, the gazpacho, the mushroom bisque-basically all of them. If you can, save room for dessert. The cheesecake is delicious, as is the apple cake, carrot cake...mmmmm.

The atmosphere has been the same since they opened according to my mom. Dark-kind of classy-wall paper, dark wood tables and chairs in this huge open room. When you get there you stand in line, place your order, then are instructed where to sit. They give you the end of the ticket with your number on it. When the wait staff walks around with your order, they yell out the number. "Number 98!". You raise your hand and are delivered a little bit of heaven. Seriously, this place is that good! If you are in the area, check it out!

I stopped by for lunch with a colleague while visiting Springfield. We must have just ordered right before the lunch rush. When we arrived, there was no one else there, it was comfortable, and the wallpaper and friendly staff contributed to the cozy vibe.
Sandwhich was an excellent deal. I got the club and it was very filling.
I also want to note that the person who took our order at the register made a considerable effort to remember the locals' names, I thought that was very kind.

I enjoyed it. I haven't tried this place prior to the ownership change, so I can't attest to how it tastes before. The people were nice and my sandwich, while not super fancy, was enjoyable and reasonably priced. Wish there was cake though, which the yelp menu said they had.

The Feed Store gets a lot of hate because it's not "the same." I can't attest to its past, I can only rate its present. I love their chicken salad sandwich. And their soups are delicious. They hire developmentally delayed people which I love, they do a great job and are friendly and work hard. Yes, it is outdated but that is part of its charm. Usually not busy at all at lunch. Reasonably priced.

This used to be the best run, best tasting, best lunchtime hangout in downtown Springfield. Unfortunately, COVID led to a change in ownership which led to a change in quality. There never was much in terms of service at the old Feed Store, but it is truly bare-bones now. The building is beautiful and unique but they are serving food on paper plates and in styrofoam bowls no presentation whatsoever. It's sad to see ownership cutting corners, I assume to try to save money, at the expense of quality, tarnishing a once beloved restaurant.

      Updated review

I was so upset when I heard the Feed Store was closing last year! Even worse, the news came so quickly that I didn't have time to drive to Springfield to get in one last fix. Luckily they have reopened with the same menu and recipes, and I finally got a chance to try the "new Feed Store" a few weeks ago while home visiting my parents.

I'm not sure how long they've been reopened (they don't have a website at the moment, and nobody has updated the Facebook page since the announcement they were closing), but it felt like maybe it hadn't been very long? The atmosphere is decidedly different inside now, like when you first move into a house and haven't made it home yet. There are no decorations (or even the usual posted menus) on the walls, and all the plants in the front window are gone. They've also changed the ordering system; it's more like a typical sandwich shop now with a large menu hanging in the front and someone taking orders and payment at the front counter. Totally fine, just different after so many years of paying at the back as you leave!

On to the most important thing... the food! The first thing I noticed was that there are fewer daily soup selections (at least the day I was there). I had to order my "usual" as a litmus test, so I got a bowl of Wisconsin Cheese and a chicken salad sandwich. The chicken salad tastes exactly how I remember! Apparently you do have to actually order "extras" (lettuce, etc) now, which we didn't realized, so the sandwich came out plain. I could care less about lettuce, but I was bummed to see they don't put a pickle spear on the plate anymore! Bring back the pickles!!! The Wisconsin Cheese soup was good, but something was off. By the end of the bowl I decided it was the thickness... this was a much thinner version, and perhaps slightly more bland? I think a little more seasoning and a thicker texture and they'll have it. My mom said the mushroom bisque was really good.

Overall, I'm just glad The Feed Store is back. I'm sure it'll take some time for them to get in a groove and get the soups perfected. I do hope they add some of the old charm back in (guys, if you need some plants let me know). Looking forward to future bowls of soup and keeping this downtown staple alive!

This restaurant is under different ownership from over a year ago. I've been here twice and my regular sandwich, pastrami on rye was about the same as before. I have heard from several people who stopped getting the soup because it was thinner. There is no longer the orange slice and the pickle garnish but chalk that up to covid. I hope they do well.

I recently visited the Feed store, as I have been here a few times over the years. My wife and I had a sandwich. She had a Turkey Avocado and I had Pastrami. Both were very good. The portion was good and the quality was very good. We will be back. Very dependable for a good fresh sandwich.
