Oh my! I love the Feed Store. It is definitely a Springfield landmark. I have been frequenting this place since we moved to Springfield when I was 13 and my mom has been coming here since she was in high school.
I would argue this is THE place to go for lunch downtown. They are only open for lunch, M-S, but it always packed during this time. My personal favorites are the chicken salad on a croissant, the prairie turkey on french, the bagel with veggie cream cheese and the lox bagel. Yum! All of these are amazing. Everything is made fresh-the bread, the veggie cream cheese, the chicken salad-which is oh my god good. It is the creamiest I have ever had. It's more than likely insanely bad for you-but oh well, it is worth it once in a while. Their soups are a must. I love the cream of broccoli, wisconsin cheddar, the gazpacho, the mushroom bisque-basically all of them. If you can, save room for dessert. The cheesecake is delicious, as is the apple cake, carrot cake...mmmmm.
The atmosphere has been the same since they opened according to my mom. Dark-kind of classy-wall paper, dark wood tables and chairs in this huge open room. When you get there you stand in line, place your order, then are instructed where to sit. They give you the end of the ticket with your number on it. When the wait staff walks around with your order, they yell out the number. "Number 98!". You raise your hand and are delivered a little bit of heaven. Seriously, this place is that good! If you are in the area, check it out!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Desiree W.Chicago, IL027Aug 28, 2019
FANTASTIC!!! Always stop here when I'm in town. Hard to find a better sandwich in Chicago. Homemade soups are wonderful.

Good place for a quick lunch. Sandwiches made to order. Soups appear to be home made.

Reminds me of a little place I went to all the time with my dad in downtown McKinney, TX as a kid. Set up like a small town country restaurant with a very friendly staff.
I got the corned beef Reuben with gazpacho, and it was great. I really don't think you can go wrong with the sandwiches here - most of the offerings are sandwiches and soups, there are salads as well.
This is a charming little lunch restaurant. I will definitely be back.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Brian C.Rochester, IL09Mar 19, 2016
Advertised ON THE DOOR that they were open today (Saturday, March 19) 11:00 am to 3 pm. It is now 12:48 pm. The door is closed and locked. The Feed Store is as faithful to the truth as is the Governor. After the President's visit, we were looking forward to dining there... He would be disappointed, as we are.
Shame.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Veronica S.Leander, TX143131Jul 7, 2017
The Uppercrust sand-which was delicious and everything was fresh and tasty....except the sauerkraut. The sauerkraut was flavorless and disappointing. Still worth a visit. Pineapple concoction was also delicious! Very refreshing.

This place is mediocre at best.
I loved the cheese soup - my love ended there. Their chicken salad on wheat wonder-bread is mushy and boring, flavorless mush. Everything on the menu reminds me of hospital food, which considering I work in hospitals, it's something i know a little bit about. Most of the sandwiches are things you could buy at a grocery store deli for cheaper. Skip this place unless you're in the mood for soup - the wisconsin cheese is great and my coworker liked the mushroom soup.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jill O.Waldo, FL5042Feb 8, 2017
I took my 91 year old Father and my 86 year old Aunt out to lunch here today. Awesome food, wonderful service. Great experience. The only thing that kept me from 5 stars is the parking. Just park underground and go up the elevator. Ta da you come out right in front of the entrance. So I would tell anybody be that wants a great little place to eat to try it!

Really fantastic sandwiches. This restaurant is reminiscent of the famous Sienfield soup nazi. Quirky house rules and you better know what you want when you reach the front of the line. Try mixing the soups 50/50 for some great flavors!
I only wish this place had better hours. Oh yea and the decor feels like your grandma may have chosen the wallpaper - and I mean that in a familiar, cozy, good way.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Mar 10, 2010Previous reviewGreat place for a soup and sandwich downtown. Visitors experience a soup-Nazi style ordering system where you line up along the entire length of the restaurant waiting your moment to order and be seated. It's always packed because it's damn good. Hint: don't be afraid to ask for 2 soups mixed. I get 1/2 Wisconsin cheddar and 1/2 creamy baked potato with an "un-holy cow" sandwich.

Soooo...if what you want is a homemade sandwich with fresh ingredients, homemade soup (if they haven't run out of your favorite) that people rave about, and a SUPER QUICK service time...go here!
Feed Store has been in Springfield for decades and does a great job at the above. So...why no 4th star you may ask?
Well, I'm not a fan of cafateria style dining but that isn't why they lose a star. The dining room staff just deliver food...so small tips are received. That seems to translate into a lackadaisical attitude. They are prompt...don't get me wrong...just not very happy.
The final issue are their hours of operation. Very short because they specialize in lunches.
No hate mail! I know Springfield LOVES this place. I just...well...like it.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Isabel A.Wood Dale, IL065May 24, 2018
This joint was horrid! I waited 30 mins and had no food! The place was muggy and my friend waited 25 mins for an iced tea then a 12 min wait to pay and I waited 30 for a flimsy turkey sandwich and they said it'll be a while... a while!! For a sandwich I could make myself. Legit I rather starve!
