🎉 Congratulations to our 2021 SVRI Grantee from Jordan on the publication of their groundbreaking research focused on preventing intimate partner violence (IPV) among women seeking in vitro fertilization treatments in Jordan. Infertility can cause serious social, emotional, and financial impacts on a couple, including straining marital relationships. This, compounded with the social pressure to fulfil expected gender norms through parenthood, can lead to a heightened risk of intimate partner violence against women, as well as to mental health problems for the couple. This important research, conducted by the Jordan University of Science and Technology, explores the effectiveness of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) interventions aimed at preventing IPV and improving mental health outcomes for patients in a fertility clinic setting. Las mujeres son asesinadas de forma desproporcionada por sus parejas íntimas. En todo el mundo, uno de cada tres homicidios de mujeres es perpetrado por una pareja actual o anterior. En América Latina, las tasas de femicidio se han mantenido constantes a lo largo de los años a pesar de la promulgación de leyes específicas contra el femicidio. En este contexto, es clave conocer las características específicas de los agresores, especialmente en lo que respecta a su salud mental. Este estudio realizado con autores de femicidio, homicidio de hombre a hombre, y otros delitos violentos en Buenos Aires, Argentina, compara los niveles de psicopatía, trastorno psicológico e historia de tratamiento de los agresores. Los resultados sugieren que los autores de femicidio son más propensos a experimentar sufrimiento psicológico y tres veces más propensos a autoreportar tratamientos previos de salud mental y uso de sustancias. Women are disproportionately killed by their intimate partners. Globally, one in every three female homicides is perpetrated by a current or former intimate partner. In Latin America, femicide rates have been consistent over the years despite the enactment of specific-femicide laws. In this context, it is key to understand if perpetrators have specific features, especially regarding their mental health. This study conducted with perpetrators of femicide, male-male homicide, and other violent crimes in Buenos Aires, Argentina, compares levels of psychopathy, psychological distress, and treatment history. The findings suggest that femicide perpetrators are more likely to experience psychological distress and three times more likely to self-report prior mental health and substance use treatment.
