Register as a person with no fixed or permanent address

If you do not have a fixed or permanent address in Northern Ireland you can register at an address at which you commonly spend a substantial part of your time using a Declaration of Local Connection form.  You will be registered in the area in which the address you give is situated. Please read the notes attached to the form for details of how to apply.

Register as an overseas elector

New eligibility criteria to register

British or eligible Irish citizens living outside of the UK can be registered to vote at UK Parliamentary elections. These are called overseas electors.

The previous 15 year rule has now been removed so you can register regardless of when you left Northern Ireland. You also do not have to have been previously registered to vote.

Eligibility criteria

You can register as an overseas if you:

  • are a British citizen or an eligible Irish citizen* who lives outside of the UK;
  • are aged 16 and over (although you won't be able to vote until you are 18); and
  • previously lived in Northern Ireland

*An ‘eligible Irish citizen’ is someone who was born in Northern Ireland, who is an Irish citizen and also qualifies as a British citizen (whether or not they identify themselves as such)

When you register as an overseas elector you must register at your qualifying address. This is either:

  • the last address you were registered to vote at in the UK (this may not be last address you lived at if you did not register to vote at your last address); or
  • only if you have never been registered, can you then choose to register at the last address you lived at

You will be registered in the constituency that your qualifying address is in and you will be allocated to vote at the local polling station. You can vote in person at this polling station if you are in Northern Ireland on election day. Alternatively, you will need to appoint someone (known as a "proxy") to vote on your behalf (this can be done on the overseas application form).
