Below is a list of special gadgets users can enable on their preferences page, as defined by the definitions. This overview provides easy access to the system message pages that define each gadget's description and code.
Browsing gadgets[View description]

Editing gadgets[View description]
- Hot Cat: easily add / remove / change a category on a media file, with name suggestion [example] (View description | Export)

Uses: Gadget-edittop.js - WikEd — Syntax highlighting in the edit box to make editing more straightforward. [Only works in Mozilla based (aka Firefox) browsers] (View description | Export)
Uses: Gadget-wikied.js - Autosight: Add a "review this revision checkbox" on pages already sighted. (like controllable auto-sight). Does not work for rollback. [must be a reviewer to work] (View description | Export)

Reviewing articles[View description]
- ReviewAlert (formerly RedayAlert) - Become notified when an article is tagged with {{review}} or the stable version of a published article becomes outdated (In a way similar to what happens upon an edit to your talk page) (View description | Export)
Uses: Gadget-readyAlert.js - Review progress – Progressively change the wikinews logo to red depending on how many articles are waiting to be reviewed. (Only works on monobook and vector.) (View description | Export)
Uses: Gadget-progress-review.js - Char Count Add a button to the toolbox to get the character count of the current page (not including formatting characters). (View description | Export)
Uses: Gadget-articleCharacterCount.js - On screen edit: Allows person to highlight, strikeout, delete text in a WYSIWYG type editor (not a real editor; no save). Meant to help reviewers to keep track of what they've reviewed by allowing them to mark sections of the text. Once enabled, adds line to toolbar at bottom of left column. (View description | Export)

User interface gadgets[View description]
- Open links to external sites in a new window (View description | Export)
Uses: Gadget-extlinks.js - UTCLiveClock: add a clock in the personal toolbar that shows the current time in UTC, and provides a purge link. (View description | Export)

Uses: Gadget-weatherConvert.js - Change the "new section" tab text to instead display the much narrower "+". (View description | Export)
Uses: Gadget-addsection-plus.js - Disable scrolling news tickers (like {{ticker}}). Some people might find them a waste of cpu cycles. (View description | Export)
Uses: Gadget-disableTicker.js - User Messages: This semiautomagically adds many many template messages to user talk pages. Please be careful that you know what the template will say before using a given option, and that you do not spam user talk pages. (View description | Export)
Uses: Gadget-UserMessages.js - tab-blinker Change the notification for new messages from the You have new messages box into making the My talk link in the upper-left corner blink. [Firefox and Opera only] (View description | Export)
