A good start with going down after Season 2
antonbardin17 August 2024
Warning: Spoilers
It has a very exiting beginning and great twists. I enjoyed watching the first two seasons a lot. But then I felt that the crew had run out of ideas and the final season was quite boring and the most disappointing.

At the end I thought there are a lot of commonalities with Dark, which I would re-watch again several times but not The Umbrella Academy, last two seasons.

Number Five is great in every season, but again, season four is boring - just four stars for me. Some points still stayed unopened and, as mentioned by others, there are a lot of dodgy places in the script.

My rating is based on all four seasons.

I enjoyed the first few seasons but this last one was a mess
Rob133114 August 2024
I have absolutely loved The Umbrella Academy ever since the very first episode. I even enjoyed this last season (s3) a lot more than most. It's unlike any other superhero type show there is. It's just such an original and unique show. It has everything you want in a good show...action, drama, comedy, suspense, twists, etc. It will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout the series! Every character is so well written, they all have superhero powers but also real life problems that they all have to deal with both individually and as a family. It's too bad that this last season (s4) was so bad. I liked the first 3 seasons so much and was looking forward to this ending and what we got was extremely disappointing. The entire season was a mess, especially the ending.

Amazing series, disappointing ending
cristina_p_200915 August 2024
Warning: Spoilers
The show was great (especially the first two seasons) but it seems that the producers/writers got the GoT syndrome. They rushed the last season, they shrunk it into only six episodes and a very (very very) disappointing finale. The whole "plot" with Ben and Jennifer seemed unnecessary, the Gene and Jean couple were super annoying and the whole thing just ended up in a ridiculous mess. The last season left me really sad and disappointed, especially since it was so long-waited for.

After watching the last season, I restarted to watch the series from the beginning, just to get that initial good taste to remain on my memory.

Terrific...except for this last season
Supermanfan-1316 August 2024
The Umbrella Academy is such an incredible show that really should be entertaining to all types of different people! I would absolutely recommend it to any superhero fan, action fan, sci-fi fan or drama fan because it has something for fans of all those genres! It may start a little slow for some while it builds up the story and characters, but it gets better and better as the story progresses. The first 3 seasons were all amazing, I can say there's very little drop in quality in those seasons but this last season feels rushed (even though they had 2yrs to get it done)! I may be a little biased because I'm such a huge fan of superhero movies/shows and while I have to say The Umbrella Academy isn't my absolute favorite one, it's still really good and very entertaining! It really brings a fresh take to the genre and has something that everyone can enjoy.

S1/S2 : So Great ! S3/S4 : So bad...
Skanama14 August 2024
Season 1 and 2 are Incredibly entertaining, wildly inventive, and full of complex characters with a fresh new idea in a world of superhero content, by providing something deeper and more personal than most superhero content dares to attempt. His casting is amazing. The show is also excellently shot, notably its cinematography during its action sequences. Its writing and directing is often on point, inciteful at times, and the show is also full of delightful twists that kept me more than interested as the show went on. Besides all these excellent traits, The Umbrella Academy also has a fantastic soundtrack and a wonderfully nostalgic attitude that will keep you entertained all the way through.

If the show had ended in 2020 with his season 2, it would have been one of the best Netflix series, but the show kept going and the 2 next seasons are so bad that i will never watch them again in my life. The characters were butchered, the plot was so boring and stupid. CGI became horrible. No more budget. I didn't even cared for the characters anymore while i loved them so much in S1/S2. There is so many problems with S3 and S4 that i can't list them all. All i know is that you will have horrible time watching those awfuls seasons...

Masterclass on how to use music in movies
rlorenzoa19 February 2019
Very entertaining series about superheroes, where superheroes have a life, a character, dramas and traumas... But what in my opinion raises it above the already good series is the use of music in the movie. Remarkable, impressive, needs to recognized with an award. It's been years (pulp fiction?) since I saw such a perfect use of music for the last time!

S1/S2 - 9/10. S3 - 7/10. S4 - 1/10.

Warning: Spoilers
Had rewatch all of the seasons in preparation for season 4, the series is so good you really want the best for all the characters, and it seems like it's almost there after season 3, then suddenly they F everything up in season 4.

How can they kill every characters, just so "save" the world?? Screw the world, they could find another way in the substations.

But the writers apparently dosen't like the series fans and just wanted a ticket out. Makes me so sad, Diego and Lila, the weird thing with Five and Lila? Ending it with her holding both of their hands, i mean wth?

Luther dosen't find his sloane either, klaus nearly gets sober and clean but nope.

Umberella acedemy is always in my heart, but season 4 ain't it. Makes me sad my favorite tv series ending like total bull.

They didnt even try for season 4
ayokunle-4762211 August 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I felt betrayed to watch a show i started at 13 to see it end up like this. It feels as if they lost the whole entire character of who five is. This is the man who would kill for his family even if they didnt aprove of his ways. I was shocked when he had an affair with lila because it is something his character would not do. Not once did lila actually talk about he kids in the 6 years on the subway. They also made Klaus regress rather than progress. I feel as if Netflix didnt care much for this final season as it only gave the show only six episodes for a final season. I feel there was a lot they wanted to get across but didnt have enough time to do so.

Season three is such a disappointment.
TaylorYee943 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Same old repetitive apocalypse and world ending AGAIN. However, when I came back for season three, I expected all that. What I love about Umbrella Academy is that each character is distinctive, that those characters create immense chemistry when coming together, and that the story is super captivating even when there are a lot of flaws. Season three ruins all the good things about UA.

I think the director at least acknowledges that the UA is trapped in redundant commission's timeline and time travel story. Therefore, he goes in and creates this 'portal', 'Kugelblitz', and so many trivia unnecessary and unexplained till the end. When I watch sci-fi related genre, I don't expect it to make sense 100%, but I expect to be invited to the world the director creates. Within the 'mindset', 'frame', or 'universe' of Umbrella Academy, things gotta make some sense. Season 1 excelled in that, providing solid ground for building its own world with viewers invited in that process. This process provides many justifications for the way things work or turn out. Season 3 throws all that away leaving audience behind the screen detached from UA universe, and so many leaps of logic are noticeable along the way.

The director unsuccessfully attempts to bring fresh and innovative side by changing characters' personalities. I totally understand why Ben is changed to be mean, snarky, and ambitious because it's different universe. However, Allison ignoring the deaths of Luther and Klaus is out of line, and the director does not even provide enough reasons behind her change. Sparrows not even feeling sad a bit (or the director not sparing any minutes) after their siblings' death shows how sparrows are just tools for story-building, too obviously and brazenly. (Being invited to bachelor party is more important than siblings' deaths to Ben?.. Seriously.. Come on.)

Season 4 - disappointing
thelittledogslaughed10 August 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Well. This turned out to be an even bigger disappointment than the final season of Game of Thrones.

Like the rest of the world, I binged seasons 1-3 in preparation for the final season. On 8th August, I settled down ready for another binge session but ended up like a rabbit in headlights but I was invested. I had to keep watching.

It went from entertaining to desperately trying to make a bit more money out of the franchise with the most ridiculous plot lines that made absolutely no sense whatsoever (I know, it's fiction) but from episode 1 it felt flat. I only stuck it out due to a sense of loyalty

So, we find out what really happened to Ben, what the Jennifer Effect is and who old Reggie was with in the final moments of the last season but the rest is just a jumble of nonsense and I was glad when it stopped to be honest

Marigold and Durango? Did I miss this in previous seasons other than a fleeting mention that made no sense?

If the Umbrellas had to destroy themselves to put the timeline back as it should be, then Allison and Diego & Lila's kids shouldn't exist! Remember the grandfather paradox? And what the hell was the script with Reggie and Abigail? No explanation whatsoever.

This season was messy and left more questions than answers

Poor form and hours of my life wasted when I should have been left feeling as though I'd just got off a roller coaster with old friends that I will never see again and feeling both happy and sad. Instead I just felt cheated.

Slowly falling off... left feeling disappointed and sad
curiousgeorgiapeach1 June 2021
Adrian Gallagher, Five, is a genuine standout for his acting in a series which is largely plagued by a storyline with rampant plot holes.

The writers had an initial idea that seemed to work but the series just never really comes together or finds a way to keep me truly interested. The plot drags on and the way they attempt to wrap up certain parts of the story is increasingly unsatisfying.

7/10 - Writing is just falling flat while, Five, is carrying the series on his back. Help the dude out.

Ruined Five and Klaus Character Development
11ovz119 August 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I loved the first two seasons and while season 3 was just okay, I still had high expectations for season 4 as it had to wrap up the story nicely. But instead we got out of character story with Five and character destruction for Klaus with so many plot holes.

1. Five, who got stuck in an apocalypse for 45 years, who STILL remained loyal to his siblings for all these 45 (and more) years, came BACK to save said siblings was okay with stealing his brother's wife and wanted to kill the said brother over a girl? GIRL? Five? THE Five who always thinks rationally, and is loyal and cares for his siblings just sleeps with his brother's kids mother?! Who wrote this?

2. Klaus, who went through the most to finally embrace his true powers and rise to his true potential is yet again thrown into the junkie world and separated from his family YET AGAIN, only to keep whining and contribute NOTHING to the plot? THE KLAUS who is always saving everyone in the comics gets the backseat in the drama!

3. Ben, Alison, Viktor don't get to showcase their powers much and mostly just there for expedition of the story.

4. Diego was made into a literally useless "retired-dad" character who goes through midlife crises. So much potential just wasted

5. Lila and Diego's beautiful love story that was built from S2 is tainted, broken, and shitted on

6. WHERE IS SLOAN?

7. Who tf is Jennifer?

8. Are we not gonna talk about Hargreeves being an alien?!

9. What happened to the other children with abilities? The ones Hargreeves couldn't find? Are they gonna keep up multiple timelines?

10. How tf the kids of Alison and Diego are gonna exist when they are erased like they were never born?!

WHAT IS THAT SUBWAY STATION?!

The most disappointing ending for such a great show. Garbage.

Season 4 doesn't disappoint... heavy stuff at the end if you can take it !
samerabdallah16 August 2024
Since season 1 the UA is the kind of series you often want to stop watching because you ask yourself "what is this nonsense", with the plot going in so different directions and twists and unpleasant situations...yet somehow the series manages to keep us hooked, and there are several reasons: 1- A very original story 2- Remarkable visual effects 3- This should be the number one reason, it is actually the characters, the members of the "family": Each personality is so well conveyed, with its own ticks and mannerisms, it is so difficult to pinpoint which actor or actress is the best, each performance is so well studied and so naturally and spontaneously played out, even the "father" who is given more space in the final season, so it will be only fair that this "ensemble" cast gets all the rewards in this category, they deserve it high and loud.

I won't reveal what happens in the final episode, but it does "deliver" on a high level, both emotionally and visually, and indeed spectacularly ! Go for it, it is not often that we witness a small screen production of this quality ! Nine stars !

A clear 8 up until the very final episode...
stephanie-6509619 August 2024
Warning: Spoilers
So I accidentally fell asleep during the last episode... And once I woke up I saw the ending... I couldn't help myself because I guessed what had happened, so I started googling the ending... It made me SO mad that I've decided never to watch the thing at all but to imagine a completely different ending in my mind for all eternity.

The show have been amazing, such a different superhero-show, with great characters, great music and plots. Aidan Gallagher is going to be a big name, I'm 100% sure of it...

But this ending had a gazillion plot holes, and forgot to explain so many things, and not to mention the fact that all the other seasons were made totally and utterly pointless by this ending. The siblings deserved a so much better ending than what they got...

I honestly believe we ALL deserved a better ending than it got.

My verdict: watch all the episodes, except for the final one. At this point, I'm almost as disappointed as I was after the final season of GOT. And that says A LOT!

Its okay, but characters lack development/don't learn from past mistakes
jacoal28 June 2022
A lot of the show would be solved if characters would just communicate with each other and ask each other questions, but they refuse to time and time again, even 3 seasons in, leading to easy to fix problems not being solved till the end.

Its just lazy writing, instead of solving problems by at least having a bit of communication and then creating new and interesting problems after, the writers decided to drag easy to solve problems throughout a whole season and then justify it by labelling the characters/family as dysfunctional.

It is so frustrating to watch, but at the same time, aside from the problems, there are still many entertaining moments, fights, and funny dialogue within scenes so I gave it a 6.

Does this show need another rant?
annacat-7858615 August 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I guess not. Fellow reviewers said it all, what's good, what's bad and how they finally messed it all up.

I watched a couple of endings (GOT) that did not satisfy me but annoyed me big time. With TUA it was only a shrug moment- kay, this is it now? They give me a useless catchy tune playing 24/7 in my head for this? And don't even spoil me with Ben/ Klaus moments as a reward?

And we don´t have to discuss 5 having a thing for Diegos girl. I don't want to remember this anymore, I'd rather imagine the vomiting with Baby Shark- scene in a loop than that. But as you can see I'll give them 8 Stars because all of this couldn't erase the quality of the first seasons, the wonderful characters, Klaus will be in my heart forever- Don't we all prefer Dxxk? ;)

I just wished they'd give us an open ending.

It was so good but got lost along the way.
dxried10 August 2024
The show started so good with season 1 and 2, but like every other show or movie that explores time travel, timelines and multiverses, it's easy to get lost along the way. After so many changes, plot lines, characters dying and coming back alive, losing or gaining powers, it really starts to look like nothing makes sense anymore. Yet, I had some hopes for last season. Having watched the whole thing I have to say I'm really disappointed and genuinely sad. Every once in a while I watch shows that start good and finish bad, and I usually still recommend them cause the good in the beginning is "worth it", but this is not the case. The last season is a total mess, writers seem to have gotten lost in the complications of all the plotlines and totally forgot what the show was really about. The plotlines made no sense, the main plotline had no explanation, they did ALL the characters so dirty, they left many (important) questions unanswered, and the finale felt so disconnected to the start of the story. To all honestly, right now I'm grieving a show that had so much potencial and just ended in the worst possible way.

Season 4 The End of the Academy
sahdevkunwar15 August 2024
Warning: Spoilers
From Season 1 to 3, the anticipation of the world ending is there. When Season 4 starts, the same is true, but with no powers, it is hard for the academy brothers and sisters to fight the bad guys. But there is a solution to it, too, and Five has it. As we proceed through each episode, you will see each character coming to a self-realisation of their motive at the end of the world. But you will be entertained and mind-bent throughout the season with the new powers, new villains, and a refreshed Hargreeves. So, if you are new to the Umbrella Academy or an old fan, you will love the ending and will find it satisfying.

Season 3 ruined what otherwise was an 8.
CountJonnie8 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Season 1 and 2 were great stories with interesting characters. All struggling with being a family while resorting to time travelling, only to discover that they are causing the apocalypse, which they were trying to prevent.

Unfortunately, 3 is not only repetitive, but also poorly written. All characters become bland. Luther is dumbed down to a point where it becomes insulting. Even if you're completely neutral/tolerant to sexual identities and transgenderism, the way Ellen Page's transformation to Elliot is crammed in the story, is forced, adds nothing to the story and feels like it's intended to give the audience a guilt trip. And what Klaus, Diego and Allison go through, can hardly be described as 'character development'.

I suspect the writers of finding cheap ways to create character depth, but in their laziness, season 3 can only be called superficial and unhinged.

S4 Extremely Disappointing
blahblohbloop8 August 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I feel like S4 was a completely different vibe than seasons 1-3. It was so much more confusing.

I felt that it was rushed, because there were so many unnecessary moments added to the story.

Why did they decide to make Five and Lila fall in love?? Why does Klaus very randomly confront an old drug dealer, show him he's immortal, and then allow himself to be kidnapped?? (Also I feel like there was way too big of a jump from Klaus stealing from Alison's home to buy drugs, to randomly levitating) I didn't really think many of these moments were very significant to the story, and kind of just dragged it out.

Also I feel as though there was a lot of excitement built up around the ominous 'Jennifer Incident', however the big reveal was honestly very underwhelming.

As for the ending, I was slightly disappointed as it also felt very underdeveloped, but ultimately glad that they settled with a sad ending. I think too many shows settle on a happy ending to please fans, so I was happy that they didn't just abide by that.

I personally believe that with so much fan material, they could've done a lot better with finding a plot line for season 4, also considering the fact that a lot of things in previous seasons were left unaddressed.

Despite all of this, I do believe that the actors did an excellent job despite a weak plot line. I also think that the beginning of season 4 began brilliantly, showing the characters lives post season 3 and also how their powers return.

I personally enjoyed seasons 1-3, TUA is one of my favourite shows no doubt, I've rewatched it many times. As for season 4 though, I'm just going to pretend it never existed.

So sad this series had to end :(
wanderingceltbl16 August 2024
Such a great series, wonderful storylines, great characters, amazing acting, and filmed in Canada! Just finished the final season, and so sad to have to say goodbye to these characters. Fantastic final season, and love the timeline stuff. Five's hubristic attitude has always made me chuckle, especially as the "youngest" yet "oldest" of the group. It was nice to see his softer underbelly this season. If only Aiden Gallagher was a little older...sigh ;) Robert Sheehan as Klaus also never fails to entertain. Such a great character it must be to play! Elliott Page is an amazing talent, and never disappoints. I love the way the writers on the show did the Vanya/Viktor transition. What a beautiful, supportive family moment. The entire cast has great chemistry, and is thoroughly enjoyable to watch. Thanks for a great show, Netflix, and I hope you find more stories like these!

Showcasing the best of comics
calahao14 August 2024
Watching through the four seasons gives quite the time stamp on comic book adaptations. The first season was more grounded, gritty and serious, much like early comic book adaptations throught the 2000's and early 2010's. From season 2 onwards, however, the series honours the comic book's sillyness and outlandish plots and characters, much like modern comic book adaptations do, and seeing it play out is a wonderful passage of time.

The characters, much like in the comics and even from the start, are a dysfunctional family that cause as many problems for themselves and they save themselves. Yet their powers and sometimes personalities are different, making them stand out on their own even if they allude to the comics.

The special effects are always competently made, especially as the aforementioned shift towards the more outlandish.

Overall a solid recommendation for character piece and just general comic book fun.

Good until the last season
natda25 August 2024
Really enjoyed this show but the last season completely felt out of sync with the whole show. Ended in such a dumb way. It had potential but this seemed like a huge after thought. None of the characters except for Claude seemed like themselves. It's so sad they have so much trouble ending these shows on a good note. This season while it has some interesting parts there was so much missing and most of the characters did nothing. Why so short also. Getting really tired of these 6 episode season where the writing is crap and nothing happens and it's called a season much less a series finally. Blah.
