Worth a watch
antide-4237627 May 2024
'Walden; isn't too highly rated on here at the moment and I think it's mark should be higher than it is. It is an entertaining movie with a fine performance from Emile Hirsch in the lead role. He is awkward, a little odd and convinces as the character.

There are overtones of 'Dexter' which quite a few people will think as they watch this but 'Walden' stands out on it's own merits and is well worth watching. I thought that the story never dragged and it was interesting to me until the very end. David Keith is good as a sort of mentor to Walden and the rest of the cast are decent. Give this one a try.

Underrated.
tin-B18 December 2023
I watched this movie in an effort to join in on comments at another site just for fun and got hooked instead. Like Roman J. Israel, Esq., starring Denzel Washington playing a legal savant with little else in the brain going for him, this movie reflects on the ranges of savants, from one too dim to be grown up, and one, the stenographer, too tried of injustice to allow it anymore. The story then delves into the ranges of vigilantism. When does it go too far? Is it always too far? But, the movie delivers this story with a lighthearted approach almost to the point of campiness, but managed to avoid it and give us a very satisfying ending. After the ending, have a discussion about how far you might be willing to go or would be willing to turn your head from or even condone. Well done.

Strong lead performance from Emile Hirsch
dubond14 December 2023
"No one gives a damn. Why should you?"

Walden is directed by Mick Davis and stars Emile Hirsch, Shane West, Kelli Garner and Tania Raymonde.

When small town court stenographer Walden Dean discovers he has a terminal illness he decides to become a vigilante to punish the people who deserve it. Emile Hirsch gives one of his best performances here as what I could only explain as "Dexter if he was on the spectrum." Seriously he really sold this role. His performance might come across as grating to some but I thought it worked for this movie.

Overall this movie isn't great but for a DTV thriller this was engaging to watch and competently made. The ending also sets up a sequel which I would be down to see.

That guy
JonnyDR7512 June 2024
Unlike other critics here, I did not feel this movie was slow-paced or boring or uneventful. I think some people just need lots of action, murder and thrills when they watch anything these days. In my opinion this movie is very good, but not great. I think the main issue lies with the main character. Anyone who has lived in the south for a considerable amount of time has known a guy like Walden. The seersucker suit, bow tie-wearing, seemingly asexual, forever single goober who's everyone's friend and shows up at ever social function to talk everyone's ear off is a staple character in every southern town. You always sense there's something dark underneath that person, but you hope to heaven that darkness never comes out. Hirsch really gets ahold of that stereotype and manages to put some additional layers in to make the guy not totally creepy, annoying, or unrelatable. The problem is that I never felt like I could get on his side. It might be because neither his backstory nor his medical revelation seems as effectively sympathetic as the writer may have hoped, or because his actions seem more motivated by selfish, psychopathic desires rather than to rid society of bad people. I think the ease with which he commits these acts right from the beginning makes his psychopathic nature eclipse any sense of his main motivation being justice. Whatever the case, Walden is definitely a complex character, just not a likable one.

It Works, and It Doesn't Work
hellsing21817 June 2024
Warning: Spoilers
The main premise of the film about Walden and his crimes is a very good story that while dark is still funny and sad at times. However, the B plot is a different matter. It seems to come out of nowhere and drags the film into the waters of a gritty police drama about the search for a serial child abuser. Though both parts of the film come together towards the end, when they are switching between the two plots it can give you a serious tone whiplash. Separately, each could work on some level as their own movie. But when they tried to make them into a single film, it just doesn't jell particularly well which throws the film off kilter.

That said, there is some pretty good cinematography on display and all the actors put in good performances. While certainly not a great movie, it's worth a watch.

Meant for tv?
benday-8842523 December 2023
I feel like the pacing and writing was massively meant for television. It was good film but but protracted at points and then wrapped up too quickly. It felt it had threads to unwrap but none of them did in a one hour and forty minute film. Acting was great and production very good but it did, at times, feel like a television series.

Main guy camps up the main role but presumably on purpose to make it feel less droll with the subject matter in hand which at times is as dark as it gets.

Enjoyed this but interested to know if it was meant instalments which might mean more films or a spin off series.

Another wasted opportunity...
Sancler27 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I've never considered Emile Hirsch to be a great actor, but at least he's alright. I read other reviews on here commending his performance in this, but I guess we must've watched an entirely different movie. To me, his role was simply excrutiaring to watch. Admittedly not entirely his fault, but still it was mostly him who made this movie look like a parody. I thought I was watching a horror comedy. There's also a lot of ridiculousness. When Walden takes revenge on his first purp/vic, without spoiling too much, it appears no one has ever heard of fingerprints in this town (or simply didn't care about solving this murder). Later on, he starts gunning down people as if it were nothing. After which there seems to have been no ballistics done whatsoever. The main antagonist finally admits to countless of heinous acts. He got made due to a minor ''mistake'' (which he could've easily denied by the way, but whatever). This little mistake seemed to annoy him, yet he had numerous of bodies (skeletons) put on display, posed in chairs (that somehow no one had ever come across, even by smell, in such a very small town), for no apparent reason other than shock value for us viewers.

It's a real shame though, I mean, how many times do we actually get to see a movie about steno? It's another wasted opportunity.

Not the best but pretty good
robNbanks626 December 2023
It took me awhile to get into this movie but once I did I guess I kinda enjoyed it a little bit. Emile hirsch was great and really was what kept the whole movie watchable . It really had strong B movie vibes and some of the acting was mediocre at best however it was really fun watching the whole story play out and I really loved Emile hirsch like I said he was funny and good but the other actors weren't really that good even the judge wasn't that good but Emile hirsch was good if you're a Emile hirsch fan I would say watch it but if you aren't I'd say go ahead and skip it cause he's the only thing that kept it together.

Amateur hour
gfrancis014 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
The entire movie is an extremely underwhelming story about a very meek court stenographer. Not really anything impressive, here is a list of SOME of the major problems, not extensive by any means. The writing seems like it was someone's first screenplay, especially the dialog, really stiff. The characters and relationships are a joke, not sure what Hirsch is going for with his portrayal. It appeared to me that several of the minor roles were played by people on their first acting job. After brain tumor surgery he still has all his hair and an ace bandage wrapped around his head twice, that's it? That is some soap opera level lameness. Every single drink in this movie is warm liquor in a glass. The oven revenge killing has a guy literally holding his own head down on the burner inside the oven, they couldn't even be bothered to make it look like he was restrained somehow. Walkden has a bunch of file boxes in his house labeled Guilty and Not Guilty that he just tosses his stenographer tapes into, what? They would be filed by case number, not just tossed in a box. This film is at the level of a high school project, don't waste your time.

Hidden gem
georgio-2649016 March 2024
This will go down in years to come as a cult classic.

Characters in this film are nothing short of wonderful.

The acting is spot on, a lovely storyline of revenge and honesty.

A soft hearted Court reporter gets fed up with seeing bad guys go free and takes it upon himself to deal out a bit of self justice, then his friend gets wrongly accused of an evil crime so he goes after the real perpetrator.....

At first I thought it was a comedic affair, but it turns out to be a unique quirky thriller with a twist or two.

Well worth a watch , I cannot understand the poor reviews. I loved it from start to end.

why
nangda5 March 2024
This movie had so much potential but it was like a long form version of a bad episode of a crime procedural.

Why the coloring? Why is the movie filtered so strangely lol Did anyone involved in this movie look into court reporting or talk to any real life court reporters? 360wpm is way, way faster than they read in the movie, The steno machine has a stand and there's a proper way to sit at it. It's not propped on a table. And steno notes DO have to be stored, by law, for a certain period of time. But I guess they would've had to write something more clever /talk to the extras who played court reporters if they'd done the research.

This movie could've been interesting AND informed the public about the court reporting profession, but it just played pretend and also fell flat in so many areas of the story.

Child killing...
kel-3163613 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I wish I had known going into this that there was going to be a graphically re-enacted child killing.

That aside, the movie was really good, really well done, good pace, well acted, well lit, perfect sound, all you could ask for in an original film.

Walden, played by Emile Hirsch, has bits of old themes (cherry picking), but an original overview.

The ending seemed to come a little too easy, but was satisfying none the less.

I, personally, see Emile Hirsch as this generations Jack Black. He's funny, versatile, handsome, and capable.

All in all, I would watch this movie again, even recommend it to others, but skip over the graphic scene. It's the kind of thing that sticks with you.

HOKIE AS ALL GET OUT
caritxrn-9874527 May 2024
This movie has its merits, but it plays like a b movie with what seems to be intentionally HOKIE performances. There are big gaps and some of it just drops off with little conclusion. However, if you lower your expectations, it can be fun. Hits are not really shown.

The lead detective doesn't seem sympathetic to victims families at first. Don't expect a lot of gore. Subject matter of the crimes are harsh. I was sad that a supposedly nice character turned out to be the worst. Just didn't fit. In the end, I don't know if the main character is cured or not. I couldn't help but wonder if hid father had also been a vigilante.

Dumb, Slow and Weird
JICNZ13 July 2024
First and foremost, this is not a crime drama. If it's anything, I suppose it's a vigilante film, but it fails at that too. The movie has a very strong vibe of Pushing Daisies or even The Truman Show: odd visual style, music, and quirky characters. The main character, Walden, is a dumpy, ugly and entirely bland man who suddenly decides to become a 'vigilante', grotesquely murdering people who have gotten away with horrendous crimes. I usually love this kind of film. The Equalizer, John Wick, Death Wish, Law Abiding Citizen--they all had great plots and satisfying action. This movie just dragged, showcasing more its bizarre dialogue, costume choices and unlikely characters over and above any interesting action. Blink and you'd miss the revenge in every case.

I genuinely don't know if this was supposed to be comedy or drama. Are we supposed to believe this non-entity, Walden, who has never touched a gun in his life, can, when the script requires him to, pull a weapon fluidly from its holster and shoot dead two muggers? No time on the range. Never held it or shot it before? Are we supposed to believe that a weak man who felt guilty hitting a robber over the head with a bottle can almost the same night tie a woman to a bed and go Annie Wilkes on her with a baseball bat? Who writes these dreadful, dreadful movies?

In summary, give this boring mess a miss.

Thoreau Would Like A Word
willard-8453414 January 2024
No idea why they decided to call this Walden, but like the rest of the movie, it makes about as much sense. First, Emile Hirsch is a fine actor, and I was surprised that he showed up in what appears to be a low-budget thriller, where he as adopted an autistic Truman Capote accent. This is Room-level bad across the board. The plot, a Dexter rip-off, makes no sense whatsoever. The other actor all seem to think they are the main character in another movie. Even the crimes themselves have no basis in reality and as even a simple detective/procedural drama, whatever is holding the cast together is paper thin. The Room made more sense and at least had the decency to be "so bad it's good." Pass on this.

Since when is Atlanta a "small southern town?!"
brendalyngardner31 July 2024
I watched this HOT MESS of a "movie" as I was desperately trying to find something new to watch,I should have kept searching!!

It says it is set in "a small southern town" Last time I looked out my window, Atlanta was NOT small!

I have lived here since the 80s and it has only gotten larger! Just looking at this mess even Stevie Wonder can SEE it was NOT even filmed IN Atlanta!! How can the makers of this fraud be allowed to blatantly LIE like that!? I know we live in a time where LIARS even run for POTUS,twice, but this is too much! My advice is to keep scrolling PAST this catastrophe, you will be glad you did!!

A really good film
latinfineart10 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I live in a world where I often dream about being a vigilante. I sometimes wonder if an opportunity will ever come along, where I can eliminate really bad monsters, who prey on humanity. Especially children, there's never any excuse for that kind of behavior on any level, so when a film like this comes along I find it very refreshing.

I never was a huge fan of Emile Hirsch, though he is a good actor. I consider this to be a truly outstanding performance, he really nailed the nuance, he was able to build a really fascinating and believable character, who was quirky. The script was funny and smart, but at the same time sincere and compassionate.

I really enjoy this film well beyond what I expected going into it. I highly recommend this film for people who don't take themselves too seriously, and understand the potential value of setting limits, and crossing the line if that line needs to be crossed.

Like Dexter only shorter
Amanoftaste24 June 2024
Warning: Spoilers
So Walden is a mild mannered stenographer who kills criminals that escaped justice ... hmm not sure why but seems somehow familiar?

Walden himself is a good character with a good script and well acted I guess but the supporting cast i.e. Police are truly appalling plus some of the plot / flow is just so erratic. The obviously incorrect arrest with no apparent evidence despite the arresting officer later saying that even he didn't think it was the right person, the end clue that was so minimal and unconnected yet somehow lead to an immediate open confession, plus the nosey girlfriend painfully declaring the end of a relationship that didn't even exist in the first place - it was just so sporadic.

Overall it was all just so ...almost.

Made for tv movie
axxmqmcy1 June 2024
I almost rented this out of desperation a month ago, in certainly glad I did not. The other reviews were right, this thing has the make and feel of a lifetime movie version of Dexter without any of the cool factor or great acting.

🎭 you'll see a lot of recognizable faces but the story itself is fundamentally flawed, not to mention a lot of the script was just hoaky.

I managed to suffer thru to the end but if I hadn't been stuck too far from the remote with my wife asleep on me, I definitely would have changed the movie in the first 5 minutes.

If you think this is going to be an interesting horror/drama/mystery movie, it's not any of those things. What it is, in fact, is a Horrible movie.

Boring and uneventful
alyse-russell0710 June 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I've seen other reviews saying this movie was supposed to be comparable to the show Dexter.

They're not wrong but Dexter was definitely way better.

It was boring and rushed. The "love" aspect was absolutely unnecessary and made no sense to the actual plot.

The preview I saw made the movie seem a lot better than it was and I wish that I hadn't spent 2 hours of my life on this. However, I have noticed that I have been struggling with finding something that really "wow"s me lately.

I enjoy the actors and the acting, my complaints fall on the writing for sure. They tried to tie up every lose end before the movie was over, but it felt too neat and easy to me.

Was the main character doing what he was because he figured he was dying, or was it the tumors that affected his judgement? Why did the judge give it up so easily? Also, he saw a tear in the back seat of the car. How did the main character actually connect that to the kids? Then the guy they originally arrested.... Don't get me started. "Can I show you something bad?" Why would the detectives suddenly think, "this guy showed us this awful place with dead children and called it bad, clearly not our bad guy"?

Maybe the person who suggested it should have been a TV thing was right. One can't shove so much information and confusion into 2hrs and make it coherent.

We need better movies now. Creativity has either been dried up or production agencies have given up. I feel sorry for the scripts that get dropped in the trash because of the restrictions nowadays.

Enjoyed this
Hrichard777 June 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I had never heard of this before and came over it by accident whilst searching through prime video whilst bored .

The story takes a little time to get going but well worth the wait, the acting is very good especially the leads for what appears to be a very underrated movie.

It is more of a thriller than horror there a few murders but the actual violence is off camera mainly and the after math is shown very quickly and not dwelt on although the main crimes involve children so not a pleasant subject.

Overall a good film not a classic and won't win many awards but definitely worth sticking with it .

What a chance of a lifetime
spegaljulie8 January 2024
What an amazing performance. Rented it on Amazon prime and watched it several times, couldn't help myself. I now want to read the book and compare the movie with the book. I so recommend this movie to adults, certainly not appropriate for children. It is in depth detail of what a stenographer goes through trying to catch a child pedophile. I was so moved by this performance and have not felt so strong about a movie in a long time. In no circumstances will you get bored or want to get away from whatever device you decide to watch it on. Be prepared to sit still for the thrill you do not see transpiring.

Dexter 2.0
naijshua-627-9722166 February 2024
I could easily see this being a series. Yes it's like AB movie but the character is great the situation is ideal and always do the right thing.

If you don't know the system has always been failing us and it will continue to do so because it's not designed to be for us. Walden is when we take over the system and I'm not just a fine killing people but some people gotta go for the betterment of everyon.

Doesn't have to be that way but they won't conform anyhow it's a great film I enjoyed it it did take a couple of attempts to watch it thoroughly but the end result was great and that's what I care about if I had to compare it to something I would say it's like a 1980s phone booth and both movies have a great ending.

Know They Enemy.

Walden. A movie.
emmeenash22 June 2024
I'm only halfway through at the time of this review. I reserve the right to return and edit this review, if they let me. That said Walden is - so far - a phenomenal movie.

It's visually beautiful. I love the vintage mixed with 22nd century. The clothes and scenery is giving '60s retro mixed with thin-tablets.

Early on I can't decide if Walden, the protagonist, is creepy or just different.

He's a court stenographer, and one of the first shots is of him cleaning his tool (get your head outta the gutter). His stenograph. We get to see the pride he seems to have in it. And then we see him lying in bed, praying, wearing Louis Vuitton pajamas. Creepy? Or different?

Sinister Twist with Dark Humor
kevinkishin8 July 2024
First I gotta say this snuck up on me, this film is a independent cult classic, the dark humor & sinister plot twist was paced well for me, this movie is not too over the top for your senses, the direct too the point main character is just right. The connoisseurs of independent cinema should enjoy, hell I did. I gotta add it's a damn shame this film didn't get the push like most films but you gotta be plugged into the mainstream for that, that being said this film stands on it's own merit. The pacing of this film was not full of cliches too bog a viewer down, the main character was all in, the supporting cast was not out of place for me at all.
