George Helmy (Democratic Party) is a member of the U.S. Senate from New Jersey. He assumed office on September 9, 2024. His current term ends on January 3, 2025.

On August 16, 2024, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy (D) announced that he selected Helmy to serve as the interim senator for Sen. Bob Menendez's (D) seat effective September 9, 2024, until the winner of the November general election is certified. Murphy indicated he would then appoint the winner to the seat.[1][2]

Education

Helmy received a bachelor's degree in psychology from Rutgers University and a master's degree in finance and management from Harvard University.[3]

Career

Helmy worked for 12 years as a business operations manager at The UPS Store and for six years as a managing partner at The Helmy Group, a property management firm. In 2011, Helmy joined the office of then-Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.), where he worked for two years as an advisor. In 2013, Helmy joined American Express as a senior relationship manager for state and local governments. Helmy joined Sen. Cory Booker's (D-N.J.) office as deputy chief of staff in 2014 and was promoted to state director in 2016. On January 25, 2019, Gov. Phil Murphy (D) announced that Helmy would join his administration as chief of staff effective February 4, 2019.[4]

Helmy served as chief of staff for the gubernatorial administration of New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy (D). He began serving in this role in February 2019. He resigned on October 14, 2021, to work full-time on Murphy's re-election campaign. After Gov. Murphy won re-election, Helmy rejoined the governor's administration as chief of staff in November 2021.[5][6]
