I am a fourth-generation Nevadan from the pioneer Stewart family that settled the Las Vegas valley in the early 1900's. I graduated from Las Vegas High School and earned my Bachelor's Degree in Hotel Administration and Business Management from UNLV.

I was inspired at a young age by my parents-my father Mel Close served as Assembly Speaker and in the Nevada State Senate, and my mother, Connie Stewart Close as a Regional Aide for US Senator Paul Laxalt. I was raised to believe that Public Service is a way of giving back to the community and helping Nevada continue to grow and prosper for future generations.

My husband Damon and I have been married for 30 years, and we have been blessed with two daughters, both of whom attended Clark County public schools and UNLV.

Damon and I obtained our real estate licenses in 1993 and sold real estate as a team for more than ten years, frequently being the top producing agents for General Realty. In 2005 we opened a Port of Subs franchise in Henderson and successfully operated there for over 15 years, consistently earning awards for customer service and sales productivity.

In the Assembly I earned a reputation as a hard worker, diligent advocate, and a fearless champion for healthcare access, quality education, public safety, and economic opportunity. I have been twice elected Assemblywoman for District 22 and look forward to continuing my hard work and dedication to the Henderson community.

  • A quality education in Nevada should not be available only to those with the right zip code. That is why I am a strong supporter of school choice. As a mother of two, I know that all students learn differently and have different skill sets. Parents should be able to choose the school that works best for their child, period.
  • We must have safe streets for our kids to play on, drive on, and for our families to live on. Right now, Southern Nevada is facing an unprecedented crime wave and we need leaders ready to go to Carson City and make sure that the rule of law is being enforced and existing laws are strengthened to punish offenders.
  • We must continue to diversify our economy. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown us the fragility of our current economy and while we have taken steps in the past toward this goal, much work remains. Legislators should always be working to foster an environment that creates high quality, high paying jobs for all Nevada families.

I focus on a few key areas that most affect my constituents-education, public safety, economic stability and diversification, healthcare, and victims' rights. I am proud of the work I have done in those areas and look forward to the opportunity to continue that work. I am a proud champion of consistent conservative values and I believe we need more leaders who share our values in the Nevada Assembly.

I remember the day President Reagan was shot. I was on the Floor of the Nevada State Senate chamber with my father and the Sergeant of Arms came in and told the President of the Senate what had happened. We were then all escorted to a secure room to be briefed on what had happened.

John Grisham is my favorite author, I like all of his books.

Scorecards

See also: State legislative scorecards and State legislative scorecards in Nevada

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
