Bio
James R. Wilson is a professor in the Edward P. Fitts Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at North Carolina State University, where he served as director of graduate programs (1995–1999) and head (1999–2007). He received a B.A. degree in mathematics from Rice University in 1970, and he received M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in industrial engineering from Purdue in 1977 and 1979, respectively. He has served on the faculties of The University of Texas at Austin (1979–1984); Purdue (1985–1991); and N.C. State (1991–present).
Dr. Wilson’s current research interests are focused on probabilistic and statistical issues in the design and analysis of simulation experiments. He has published ninety-six archival journal articles, six book chapters, three books, and seventy-eight papers in the proceedings of conferences. He has given over 130 invited presentations at conferences, universities, or industrial organizations around the world. Five of Dr. Wilson’s former Ph.D. students have received the Pritsker Doctoral Dissertation Award from the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE): Natalie M. Steiger (2000, Second Place); Faker Zouaoui (2002, Second Place); Emily K. Lada (2004, First Place); Claudia Antonini Bova (2006, Second Place); and Tûba Aktaran-Kalaycı (2007, Third Place). Moreover, Dr. Thanos Avramidis, another of Dr. Wilson’s former Ph.D. students, received First Place in the 1993 George E. Nicholson Student Paper Competition sponsored by the Operations Research Society of America (now INFORMS).
Professional recognition for Dr. Wilson includes the following: the “Outstanding Simulation Publication Award” from The Institute of Management Sciences College on Sim¬ulation (1985); the “Distinguished Service Award” from the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) College on Simulation (1995); the “UTC Excellence in Teaching Award” from North Carolina State University College of Engineering and the United Technologies Research Center (1996); the IIE Transactions “Best Paper Award” from IIE (1997, 2006, 2010); the “Alumni Association Outstanding Research Award” from North Carolina State University (1999); election as Fellow of IIE (2002); and election as Fellow of INFORMS (2005).
