(Aug. 15, 2024) Harbormaster Sheila Lucey's office is closely monitoring the path of Hurricane Ernesto, which it expects to bring high surf and extremely strong rip currents to island waters beginning Friday and lasting through the weekend.
"We anticipate flying double red flags and closing the water to swimming on the south shore. Please plan accordingly and swim on the North Shore," Lucey wrote in a social media post Thursday.
"We have lifeguards at Dionis, Children’s and Jetties beaches who are ready to help. North shore water is more refreshing than south shore water."
According to CBS News Boston, "we could easily see five- to 10- foot waves at many of our beaches, especially over the islands and outer Cape Cod this weekend into early next week. Just offshore, there could be swells of 10-20 feet.”
