(June 2, 2022) The idea that PFAS contamination is confined to well-water of homes near Nantucket Memorial Airport is unrealistic, Jonathan Damashek said.
And the issue is really going to come to a head when it starts affecting multi-million- dollar homes and their property values.
“That’s unfortunately the only thing that’s going to make the town wake up,” he said. “Right now, it’s concentrated in a small section of the island. I think if more people start testing their wells further away from the airport, we’re going to see this is a big problem that deserves attention.”
The town is in the midst of an islandwide assessment of PFAS. In 2020 it hired the firm CDM Smith to evaluate potential municipal sources that contribute to PFAS contamination on the island.
