  • Driving around San Diego is the most convenient and comfortable way of getting to know all corners of the region, as the freeway system is fairly easy to navigate and traffic is manageable (aside from during rush hour). Because public transportation services are unreliable in the city, staying mobile by renting a car is the best option. It is also ideal for travelers looking to explore other destinations outside the city, such as the wine country of nearby Temecula, or those who want to embark on a road trip along the California coast.
  • All the big car hire agencies can be found in the San Diego International Airport (SAN), at the Consolidated hire Car Center just outside the airport. The hire Car Center is accessible via free shuttle bus services that stop at all terminals.
  • Although the freeway system isn't generally complicated, always have a map or a GPS on hand to help you. When driving downtown, beware of tourists or other reckless drivers who may be too used to driving in the city. If you’re interested in hopping across the border to Mexico, make sure you talk to your hire agency, as they may need to provide specific documentation, such as car insurance that is also valid in the neighboring country. But if your plan includes a day trip to Tijuana, it's easier to just park your car on the U.S. side of the border and walk across.
  • Although traffic is manageable, roads are usually fairly busy throughout San Diego, so avoid rush hours both in the morning (between 6:30 and 10 a.m.) and afternoon (between 3:30 and 6:30 pm) if you don't want to be stuck in traffic for longer than needed. Freeways along the coast also get pretty packed on weekends, especially the I-5.

EVs are great in SD (at least Teslas). Lots of superchargers and if you charge after midnight, it's pretty cheap. Even drove to and around LA for a day and then back. Cost about $25 total - that's about the same as 5 gallons of gas for a lot of driving. $9 to top off at a charger near the Santa Monica Pier, and then $16 at a supercharger back in SD.

Driving in San Diego is a breeze with a GPS. Avoid the major highways during rush hour and you’ll have no issues. All of the main attractions were within a short driving distance from our Airport- Harbor Island hotel Rent from a a major company - AVOID U-Save. It did save some $ but not worth the aggravation.

If you have car insurance then it most likely have rental car coverage. Dont bother buying extra insurance from the rental agencies. Always best to call your car ins company and check about the coverage then if the rental co tries to pile this on you have some knowledge to deny it.

Make sure your rental company allows you to drive out of the area. Payless only lets you drive in SoCal, so I had to change to Thrifty at the last minute since I was doing a road trip to Colorado. Turn-in at San Diego is really easy for all rental agencies. The new car rental facility is really nice.

A little crazy compared to the midwest. Use navigation tools, with voice, and know that a slight right sometimes means a 360 degree turn. Also it will tell you to stay in the far right lane and 2 seconds later there are 2 new lanes on the right.

Need to be honest with clients. When I picked up the vehicle I was offered to pay $8.00 dls and not need to worry to return the vehicle with a full tank of gas which I agreed to pay the $8 dls. After i returned it I noticed they charged me $98.00 dls extra for filling up the tank when i returned the car with a 3/4 of the tank full. I’m very disappointed with Alamo how they still money.

The drop off was complicated moving the charges to another credit card despite our telling them our intentions before we took the car and as we dropped it off. It required a manager and quite a bit of time. Fortunately, we didn’t miss our flight but it was close despite the extra time we allocated and TSA-Pre.

Overpriced!!! I was rented an electric vehicle with only 155mi left before it needed to be re-charged. I was told that it had been on their charger for 2 1/2 days and that was as high as it had charged up to. Yet me being the renter was told I have to bring it back with just as much or more of a charge on it, or pay for having less than 155mi on it. Fortunately I was able to charge it at my work as they have a charging station and brought it back with 85mi more than they had given me. When I asked them if they were going to credit me for the extra miles I gave them, they said it didn't work that way. Funny how one sided they are isn't it?

Budget was great. I requested a vehicle to be picked up @ the airport. KAYAK reserved a vehicle @ a Budget location far away. The airport Budget Manager was able to change our reservation and rent us a van with the same discounts. Budget was great; Kayak sucks!!!

They didn’t have the vehicle we booked. We went to the first lot at the airport but realized we had to take a cab to a different hertz dealer. Then they didn’t have the correct vehicle. They were going to send us to a third hertz, but we ended up settling for a different vehicle.

My rental was not at the expected location. When I searched in Kayak, I searched for car rentals near the San Diego airport. Apparently there is a small municipal airport near the border with Tijuana and there is a Hertz car rental location there which came up in my search. Since I would not have expected this type of option to come up in my search parameters, I did not think there was a need to check the address of the rental location. A mistake I will never make again. However, I also will never be using Kayak or Hertz again. I will not be using Hertz mainly because the person at the rental counter in the actual San Diego airport location was not willing to help me other than to indicate that I was at the wrong location and that I should go to that other location if I would like my rental car.

I put in San Diego Airport and it listed this place half an hour away, at a different little airport right next to the border. They were unprofessional and the agent was apathetic. Our flight was delayed a few hours and she said our reservation was cancelled because they only keep it for an hour after the pickup time you put on the reservation. I have never heard of that before anywhere else! So, they charged me about $70 more than the reservation I had set up!

Terrible experience overall. Stay far away from this place for many reasons: 1. Car rental facility is far from San Diego (on the border with Mexico), 2. Staff does not speak English. 3. No flexibility with rental terms. 4). Unreliable cars. Ours broke down the second to last day, with less than 50 total miles driven. Car had to be towed back. Never received so much as an apology (again, the language barrier), let alone an offer to remunerate for the giant fiasco that was this rental experience. Long story short, do not rent from them!

I rented with them to pick up the car at 12pm. On August 28, 2024 They took my money and they cancel the rent of the car because I didn't pick up the car at 12pm even though I gave them the flight and the airline that will be there at 5:20pm, until today I'm not receiving my reimbursement, I called again customer service and said that I have to e-mail to a different place. Waisting so much time because of the company incompetency.

I was told I could drop the car off without issue after hours (flight at 10PM on Sunday, 7/28), however, they don't have after hours drop-off at their lot and I almost missed my flight due to not having any idea where to return the car.

The check-in line was long, which is understandable. However, the staff was so uninterested in welcoming people or talking at all. They just seemed like robots processing forms. At drop-off, they tried to suggest damage, which was already there, and mentioned dog hair in the car...which was somewhat offensive because we didn't have a dog in the car. The value, the shuttle to and from, and the car were excellent. Just have nicer employees, and it would be great!

Beware! Deceptive pricing. Forced me to take minimum coverage costing an extra $150 even though I explained I already had insurance. When I called to complain, they asked me to bring the car in for inspection and if there was no damage they would refund one day. This is crazy. Don’t rent from this company.

Person at pick up is unethical and takes advantage of people with up charges. I was a little early and he claimed that he didn’t have a mid size car and that I had to pay for an upgrade. Bill was 150 more than what I signed up for and when I got to the pickup area it was a Hundai Elantra - a mid size car. These people are cheats and manipulators. Don’t rent from them!

The pick up and drop off from the airport was very easy. All the rental car places are in a big hub and there’s a shuttle from the airport. The person who checked us in was like an auctioneer - he talked a mile a minute to us while talking to his co-workers on either side. We declined the collision and told us the he upgraded us at no cost. But in fact, he charged us for both of these. When I asked why to total was so high he said that there is a 38% airport tax! ( which there is but I can’t do math that fast). It ended up being $350 for a compact for 3 days. The car was fine. The service was super shady and I was scammed.

Ace had great pricing and pickup and drop off was quick and easy. Jenny helped us check in and was very nice and helpful. She gave my wife and I several restaurant recommendations while we were in town for the weekend. Car was nothing special and drove a little bit run down, but it was fine for the few days we used it. Would use them again because of the customer service, ease of booking, and value.

I probably didn't read the correspondence carefully. My drivers license wasn't sufficient ID and they required a second form of ID. If I hadn't had one on me I would have had to go to another counter to rent. You should make that requirement in BOLD print so I can't skim past it.

Nothing because they said or we scheduled to pick up the car at 6:00 PM and it was confirmed. We received emails for 6:00 PM pickup. When we went for pickup they were closed and there was already a customer waiting who said he had have a really hard time getting a car there. The gates were closed, no car for us. The response was “guy leaves 6:00 pm on the dot” Really? Worst place to book from. Never book your car here unless you want to take the risk of not having a car to drive when you get there.

Everything - I don’t think this car rental should be permitted to operate if they don’t have the will to serve their customers with right information and service.

I prob would have preferred the car size I reserved. I was upgraded to a bigger car which was fine but a bit cumbersome. I also would have preferred clarity upfront on how toll roads with no toll booths would be handled.

Car was comfortable, clean and drove easily - lousy mileage, but we got the sense that Californians dont care much, given the number of gas guzzlers we saw on the road at over $4.00/gal in most service stations - mixed in with Tesla's and Prius's. Odd contrast.

Cons:

All good with exception of Drop-Off. Unclear directions in the final stretch of the exercise (needed to turn up a lane in the garage that was hidden behind other cars). No staff present and when a fellow eventually showed up, he did not check the car, just told us to leave the keys in the car and all else would be dealt with - whatever that means - if there is any disagreement on gas (we filled up), damage (there was none), etc., how would one verify it after the fact?

The car was clean, comfortable. But when I booked, I paid 85$ as quoted and when I got to the counter to pick up the car, I was charged another 200$ that would cover 150$ as a "return fee" that was not disclosed anywhere because I was picking the car up at San Diego and returning it in Phoenix. I don't mind paying a fee as long as it is disclosed ahead of time and I can fully make the decision to rent or not, by comparing with other services. The counter representative only explained that it would be refunded once the car was returned. I returned it the same it was rented, (Sat 5 of sept) and the money has not been refunded (as of 9/9 9:29am). Maybe I have to wait a little longer to get the refund but there was a lack of clarity from the representative to explain where in the contract that I was to sign, it stated that it was going to be refunded. I asked how I could be assured that the money was going to be refunded and the only response was that it would. The one thing I will praise was the car attendant that received the car in Sky harbor airport in Phoenix, I did not get his name but he was very helpful, and guided me out of the rental area at 11pm. Very kind of him. For safety, I will write to Fox to let them know that as I was braking in the winding downhill road towards Phoenix, the car wheel was trembling and I had to descend at less than 50mph to be able to keep the car stable, probably an issue with tire balance. Crossing my fingers I get the refund, but this should not be the case.

We had our rental car broke into and staff that I called laughed at me saying my claim number was wrong. They also told me that if we needed to be picked up they couldn’t do it because we had a family of 5 and they could only take up to 4 people. So stayed that we had to find a ride to the airport ourselves or just drive it back in the condition it was in. They also told me that even though we had a bad situation happen if our car was not back on time we would get charged for it being late and entire extra day. We also we supposed to get a gull size car and we did not get that. Very disappointed and will not rent from them again!!!!

Questionable car rental agency. They asked for a copy of my electric or gas bill to verify my address at pickup, and tried to sell me extra insurance even though I told them I already purchased it when I booked, and paid, for the car. When returning they also checked ID to make sure I was the one who had rented the car. Very sketchy and I would not rent with them again.

I’d say it was criminal that they charged us for things without telling us (eg supplemental insurance without asking or charging us for my husband as an extra driver’) only for us to find hundreds of dollars charged to our credit card; no email receipts sent; They do not answer phones or provide an option to leave a message; I had to call toll free # and they said to email with an address that doesn’t exist; I had to go in to discuss my needs and questions and waited over 30 minutes for someone to talk with me and I ended up just leaving because it was so chaotically run.

Upon off site arrival one clerk to handle 3-4 customer groups. He was courteous but none of our cars were prepped for drive off. My rental car was dead at noon June 15, 2021 on our way from San Diego to Yosemite National Park. We contacted National roadside assistance and they couldn't do anything to help. We had to be in the middle of nowhere under the heat of 100F. After 7 hours stranded, the tow truck came at 7:30 pm to tow the car and left our luggage on the street. The taxi came at 7:45pm to take us to the rental car office, but the office was closed at 5:00pm. Taxi only offered to take us to the nearby hotel and it had to be under our own expense. I couldn't stay at the nearby hotel because I already sent my under age children to the campsite close to the Yosemite National Park with a group of friends when the car broke down. I had to pay my friend to come back from campsite to car broke down location to pick us up and took us to the campsite while the Taxi denied to take us because it was too far. We had to spend $200 to cover that pick up. The road side assistance had confirmed that their agent at the airport close to the Yosemite NP had a reserve replacement car for us, but when we came to pick up the car. They had no car available; We had to call RSA and stayed on the phone with them hours and hours, I was stranded at the airport from 9:00 am to 3:45 pm on June 16, 2021 talked to a whole bunch of different people to end up with the smaller SUV that didn’t have enough room for everybody in my family and the luggage. Half of my family had to split with other cars within our group of friends. The rental car has ruined my family vacation. We had lost 2 vacation days. Instead of enjoying nature, we have been stranded on the road or the rental car office. We had lost our park’s fee and the campsite’s fee for nothing; the stress of dealing with the Roadside assistant customer service that won’t be able to help much drove us crazy. On the top of those issues, I have been charged almost $54 for the gas on the Buick Enclave and they didn’t give me the credit for the gas left on the Infiniti QX80 when the car was dead and it still had more than ½ tank of gas. With all of those issues National only give me credit of $199. I was so frustrated with National. I will never rent from National or deal with Kayak again. The worst customer service that I have ever deal with.

When I booked this rental, the description showed the rental center was off-site as were all the other major rentals, Avis, Budget, Dollar, etc. What WASN’T revealed until our plane landed was that a 2nd shuttle from the rental center was required. That shuttle dropped us at an office located through a garage into a grimy building with all vacant offices except the U-Save rental office. After completing the paperwork (which included a statement that there would be no price adjustments if the vehicle was returned early- which we did after experiencing the multi- shuttle issue), we had to walk down a hill to a parking garage to get the car. The vehicle itself, a Toyota Corolla, (these are now “standard”, not “compact”) was a brand new hybrid and worked well except for the 1 trip we took with all 5 of our party - a bit cramped. When we decided to return the car early to avoid the dual shuttle situation on our departure day, we were directed to wait in the dark, grimy garage for the shuttle to return. 5 other folks arrived with their luggage also. After waiting around 10 minutes, we decided to Uber back to the hotel. We trudged the 1/2 block up the hill from the garage (we’re 72 and 83 years old) , where the shuttle would have been also, and got an Uber with no problem. The Uber pulled up at the same time as the shuttle - which was a 7 passenger mini-van - it would’ve been a tight squeeze. Bottom line - decent car but not worth the aggravation. Spend a few more dollars for a name brand company. I wish we had.

The price quoted, agreed and paid in advance was not the final price. When I went to collect the car, I was quoted an additional $300 for extra insurance which is only a company policy and not state law. Consequently, I did not collect the car and hired from a different company. I was assured by the pick-up desk that my credit card would not go through, but I have still been charged $640 dollars for a car I did not collect. DO NOT USE.

The pick up time was 12:00, and by the time thay came to the air port to pick is up and take us to their location it was 1:15. The guy did not try to offer us another car. The day off, 3 hours before pickup, I get a phone call from the location telling me I need to pickup an hour early because they decide to close at 4 “today”. Of fine. “Oh and also you need to drop off before 10am in 2 days because we will be closed at 10am”. “Or you can pay an extra $60 for late drop off”. What?? Late drop off would mean I extend pass my 24h, which I’m not!! If you decide to close early how does that become my problem?? Very disappointing.

Long story short it’s obvious Non sense.
