  • Who hasn’t dreamed of the winding little alleys in Venice, the magic the city emanates and the old buildings towering over the river lanes? But Venice is more than the Rialto Bridge and the St. Mark’s Square, so, although driving on the island itself is not allowed, it still makes sense to rent a car as there is more to explore than the island. Places worth driving to include the Parco Nationale delle Dolomiti Bellunesi, which is 1 hour and 40 minutes away by car and definitely worth seeing, and San Donà di Piave, another scenic city in the district of Venice, about 40 minutes away by car.
  • Rent a car upon your arrival at Venice Airport Marco Polo to conveniently and flexibly reach the parking lots on the outskirts of the city or many other destinations. The car hire desks are located on the 3rd level of the multi-level parking lot P1. Signs will indicate the way and cars will also need to be returned there when leaving Venice again.
  • Driving inside the city of Venice is not allowed, but on the mainland a car will bring you to all your dream destinations. The Italian driving style is rather aggressive, so driving defensively is important. Police officers also tend to concentrate on tourists, so adhering to speed limits (even if locals don’t) is crucial. Most roads in Italy are well-maintained but, when venturing deeper into the countryside, dirt tracks can have potholes and bumps -- so make sure the insurance covers all kinds of damages and adapt speed.
  • Rush hour can clog up the streets around Venice so it is better to avoid it. Usually the peak traffic times are between 8-10 am and 4-7 pm. During these times the water buses, known as vaporettos, are also filled up with people and getting a seat is unlikely. Therefore, if possible, try to explore all the destinations outside this timeframe and leave early in the morning or later, after a lengthy breakfast at the hotel.

They said our car we had signed up for on kayak was not available and up-charged us triple for another car. That car then immediately had a flat tire when we drove off on freeway and ended up having to wait over 6-7 hours for a tow truck and to get another car to take its place. Terrible experience. Missed our reservations that night and first day plans. Ended up sitting in the airport all day waiting for another car for Sixt to give us. . We have to go back now and try and email sixt and get a refund on part of trip charges. A mess.

I rented a car from Sixt one-way from Venice to Milan, for 5 days total. Everything went well and I had no problems with pickup in Venice, dropoff in Milan, or with the vehicle. In addition, current prices were lower on the day of pickup than when I made the reservation, and they gave me the lower price. As a result, I would not hesitate to use Sixt again in Europe (or the U.S.).

The staff was very friendly and helpful. It was an easy and quick pick-up and drop-off. The only negative was that they didn't have the size of car I reserved. I reserved a compact car to make driving and parking in Italy a little easier, but was given a large crossover SUV.

Cons:

The car was filthy - seats stained, had half eaten food between seats, dirty plastic cups and used tissues int the car. It is clear the van had been used for commercial purposes, it was not fit to be used for a family vacation trip. I had to wait an hour for the car from when I arrived which made it clear it wasn’t ready and they tried to clean it a last minute, maybe even put the back chairs back in as the middle row wasn’t fitted well and the seats rocked a bit. Also the power outlet didn’t work so I couldn’t charge my phone for using as a GPS. It was very disappointing.

We were given a brand new puegot 508 gt wagon. Car was comfortable and drove beautifully. Only complaint was the original car wasn’t big enough and we did have to upgrade. Please make sure as the size is misleading.

I think the drop off point at milan via luigi galvani is disastrous. The road has heavy traffic jam and when i stop the car there, i blocked the road heavily. When i attempt to stop at the taxi stop, the taxi drivers scolded me.

No wiper fluid. Fuel tank wasn’t full even though they said it was. Said they wouldn’t honor Allianz insurance purchased through Kayak. I asked about special requirements for driving into other counties and they denied knowledge of anything. Austria and Slovenia both use “vignette” which is a toll sticker that can only be bought at the border. The rental car said nothing existed beyond cash tolls. This ended up costing us a lot of money when we were stopped by Slovenian police a few feet from the Italian border.

Due to the air traffic glitch in Europe our flight into Venice was canceled. We arrived by trail after midnight. The next day we went to get our car and was informed they would not honor our reservation because we were late. We were priced gouged on the one day rental fee and then when we returned the car we were wrongly accused and charged for a scratched on the wheel cover.

I was charged 100 Euros for 2 receipts and a power cord that were left in the car. And I missed my train because when I went to drop it off during regular business hours, nobody was there. I had to ask a different rental company where to park the car. When I got to the parking garage to park it, nobody was there, so I left my rental receipt in the car along with a power cable I left behind. They charged my 100 Euros to throw those 2 things away. So after that whole thing, we had to take a later train to our destination, throwing off our whole schedule. And I feel like I was robbed of that 100 Euros. In the future, why would we use Hertz when Avis was available, much more helpful, and wouldn't have charged us 100 Euros for this cleaning of our rental receipts?

The booking was at 23:00 and because the office was outside the airport terminal we had to, supposedly, take the free shuttle bus. We were looking for the bus for 30 min and in the meantime try to call the company but nobody picked up the phone. When we finally arrived, with a normal bus, the place was closed and we couldn’t get in touch with any member of the rental company. The day after the booking was cancelled and no car was available, the only thing available was a 9 seater for twice the price plus the cheap price on the site is not including any extra like, if we took the vehicle, there was an extra charge to go outside Italy. Avoid at all costs, I am glad they cancelled our booking.

They do over charge and almost forcing you to buy an extra insurance even you do have one, and keeps saying your own is not good enough, stopping the paper work when you say you wont buy it. The price of the rental went from 40€ to 170€ EXTRA. the adress they gave was wrong, had to walk 10 min on a trafficed road to get to the right adress.

No airport office or signage. Address listed on rental confirmation was an apartment building. The phone number for the rental agency (listed on the confirmation page) was to another car rental agency that knew nothing about our rental, or the rental company. Had to use Whatsapp to find and call the Surprice rental agency. Finally got the correct address. When we got to the office, it was 4km from airport and doing business as AutoOne. Three workers behind the counter. I was 4th in line. Took over 45min before I got checked in. The vehicle was great, and returning the vehicle was very quick and easy. Kayak and Expedia need to better research or vet the companies they are working with.

The rent was closed when I arrived. They close at 23.00 and I indicated that I would collect the car after 23.00 giving also the details of my flight and paid an extra for out of hours collection. I would have expected them to send me a message or to cancel the rental given they surely knew they would not be there when I landed, instead I had to discover it at midnight when I passed the border controls and scrambled to find an alternative. I managed to get a full refund after speaking with the company who provided the booking.
