Rekha Jhunjhunwala and family is the richest new entrant in the Hurun Global billionaires list as India added about 16 new billionaires in 2023, occupying third spot in the world.

A total of 187 billionaires are currently residing in India, and with the latest 16 additions, the country continues to be the third largest billionaire producing nation in the world.

Only China, which added 69 new billionaires and the US with 26 entrants, are ahead of India, in terms of fresh billionaire additions, according to M3M Hurun Global Rich List released on Wednesday.

India ranks third in the world with a total of 187 billionaires. Mukesh Ambani, who sits over a wealth of $82 billion, has overtaken Gautam Adani to bag the richest Indian title. Ambani is the only Indian to feature in the top 10 of coveted global billionaires list.

Meanwhile, Gautam Adani, whose fortunes have taken a hit following a damaging report by US-based Hindenburg in January, has endured a net loss of $28 billion. The billionaire tycoon lost about Rs 3,000 crore every week over the last year.

With a wealth of $27bn, Cyrus Poonawalla of Serum Institute of India, is the third richest person in India. Poonawalla, referred to as "Vaccine King", is the richest healthcare billionaire in the world.

Over the last five years, Indian billionaires in the rich list have added $361 billion to their cumulative wealth, the report noted, which is equivalent to Hong Kong's GDP.

With no surprises here, India's financial capital Mumbai is home to 66 billionaires, followed by New Delhi and Bangalore.

Overall, the Hurun global rich list has added 176 new faces across 18 industries and 99 cities, while the number of billionaires dropped by 8% and their total wealth declined 10%, making it only the second fall in ten years. China and the US account for about 53% of billionaires in the world.
