Nine Kuki MLAs of Manipur condemned the firing of bullets at the residence of fellow legislator Chinlunthang by armed miscreants in Churachandpur district. In a joint statement, they sought steps to prevent recurrence of such incidents and to bring the culprits to book.

The nine MLAs who issued the statement on Friday were: Haokholet Kipgen, Nemcha Kipgen, Paolienlai Haokip, Letpao Haokip, Ngursanglur Sanate, LM Khaute, Letzamang Haokip, Kimneo Haokip Hangshing and Vungzagin Valte.

Tribal body platform Zo United also condemned "life threatening acts" of armed miscreants in the midnight of Wednesday in several places in Churachandpur, when they fired at the MLA's residence.

In a statement, the Zo United appealed to the central armed forces, police and "those who are in authority" to identify the miscreants and take appropriate measures to avoid "continual harassment" of people in Lamka and the town's surroundings.

Meanwhile, the Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) on Saturday said it would not oppose the execution of the National Register of Citizens in the state, provided the process is conducted under the supervision of the Supreme Court and in consultation with tribal organisations.

The KIM, one of the leading bodies of Kuki-Zomi tribals in Manipur, said it would not dispute any genuine efforts for identification of citizens and necessary actions as per constitutional rules and principles.
