    Big league beckons: Esporting in India fast approaches a turning point

    Esports is taking bold steps in India. INOX Leisure and the Esports Federation of India entered into a partnership in February.

    ​​In February, INOX Leisure, India’s second largest multiplex chain that has presence in 71 cities, and the Esports Federation of India (ESFI) entered into a partnership to popularise it in the country. By offering its cinemas as the coliseum to watch video games, INOX could provide a communityviewing experience of tournaments on the big screen — and change its fortunes.

    Electronic sports unlocked a new level in India on June 24 when the country’s largest sports broadcaster, Star Sports, began live telecast of Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) Masters Series. In a sea of cricket programming, about three and a half hours of prime time were devoted to esports— a strange mix of almost-static players glued to their devices and the unreal, rat-a-tat dynamism of virtual characters and machines.
