Synopsis

News that India plans to replace its minimum wage system with living wages trickled in last week. What difference will it make?

2025 is not far away, and India is likely to move away from its minimum wage system to a living wage system by next year. ET reported last week that the government has asked for technical assistance from the International Labour Organisation – ILO – to make the shift happen. ET Prime decodes the impact of this move. What is minimum wage? A minimum wage is the lowest rate of wage that an employer is legally bound to pay for a specific employment.
