Short Classes

There's a class for that.

GrubStreet offers hundreds of short classes every year, on every creative writing topic imaginable. These short classes meet one time for three or six hours, usually on Fridays and Saturdays, either in-person at our Center for Creative Writing in Boston, or on Zoom. Short classes are a fantastic way to do a deep dive into a particular subject–like writing about fruit, overcoming writer's block, tackling the MFA application, ekphrastic poetry, or perfecting that first sentence of your novel. You’ll find short classes in every genre, on every topic. Ever wondered how to organize your short story using grocery shopping lists? We’ve got a class for that! In any of our short classes, you can expect to participate in writing exercises and connect with other writers who share your interests.

3-hour Seminars

Want to learn how to pitch an agent, or master the omniscient point of view? Maybe you need a crash course in the finer points of dialogue, or want to explore a new essay form? These three-hour sessions hone in on a single aspect of the writing process or the writing life. Check out our seminars and workshops here.

6-hour Weekend Workshops

In a weekend workshop, writers have a whole day to dig into a broader element of craft, through generative exercises and on-the-spot feedback sessions. Classes might focus on topics like the revision process, craft elements like point of view, or an introduction to a new genre. Check out our seminars and workshops here.

Free Writing Sessions

New to Grub and not sure where to start? Check out our free sessions! A few times a month, both in-person and on Zoom, we hold free writing sessions to whet your creative whistle and connect with other writers. Once a term several staff members come together to host Open House events, where students can find out about new classes and get advice on the courses that best suit their needs.
