Eyeing e-commerce boom, DTDC has set up regional hub in Guwahati

GUWAHATI: With Northeast India witnessing e-commerce boom, logistics service provider DTDC Express Limited has set up regional hub in Guwahati.

The regional hub with dedicated transport will cater Silchar in Barak Valley, Tinsukia, Bongaigaon, Lakhimpur, Tezpur in Assam, Aizawl in Mizoram, Dimapur in Nagaland, Shillong in Meghalaya.

Subasish Chakraborty, Chairman and Managing Director, DTDC who was in Guwahati on Friday told ET, “Northeast India is consumption area and a big market for logistics mover. Even consignments from China come to the region.”


He added, “With regional hub in place, we will add another eight routes in next one year with these we will have 16 dedicated routes.”

Sanjiv Kathuria, Director and CEO of DTDC E-commerce logistics Ltd, “ We have done analyse and found that inquiry for one lakh shipments generate in e-trailer platform everyday however due to low penetration of logistics movement, only 40,000 shipments gets materialized.”

He added that the delivery in e-trailer platform in Northeast India is restricted to certain cities of the region for delivery does not take place across the region following reluctance of logistics mover to operate in geographically difficult places."

"The e-trailer market in Northeast is around 350 Crore annually. In next couple of years the size of e-commerce market of Northeast India will cross Rs 1000 crore, "Kathuria said.

He said that in Assam there is entry tax of 4 percent. “Northeast India accounts for 5 to 6 percent of total e-commerce trade of the country.”

Another area hugely contributing to the logistics movement in Northeast India is pharmaceutical goods. Chakraborty said, “We have around 235 offices across the region covering 315 pin codes, in one year we are going to increase the number of offices to 300 and cover over 500 pin codes. We are penetrating deeper in Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram.
