The ‘Barfi’ actor, who was in Kolkata on Sunday (February 26) to promote his upcoming rom-com ‘Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar’, spoke against the boycott trends and slammed social media cancel culture as "baseless."

Speaking about the boycott subculture, which has gained massive momentum in recent years, he stated that films are primarily made for entertainment and provide a means for escapism and a temporary respite from reality, so boycotting them was “baseless”.

“Films are made for entertainment purposes, we are not saving the world. So audiences come to theatres to forget their worries. They come to watch films on the big screen, to have a good time. I just don't know (comprehend) the boycott thing," he was quoted as saying to a leading English daily.

He also addressed rumours about him being signed to work on cricket icon Sourav Ganguly’s biopic. The star claimed he had not received any offers.

"Dada is a living legend, not just here but around the world. The biopic on him will be very special. Unfortunately, I was not offered this film. Don't know if the makers of the film are still writing the script,” revealed the ‘Yeh Jawani Hai Diwani’ star.

However, he revealed that he was indeed working on the biopic of another illustrious Bengali icon - Kishore Kumar. “For 11 years, I have been working on a biopic of Kishore Kumar, the story written by Anurag Basu. I am hoping that is going to be my next biopic."

He also hailed the SRK-starrer ‘Pathaan’ for giving Bollywood a new lease of life. "What Pathaan has managed to do, the film industry needed it. Very happy and grateful that 'Pathaan' has done that. And I think Shah Rukh Khan deserves all the success for 'Pathaan'. I have seen him as an actor, I have been able to work with him several times. He gave so much to this industry. I am very proud of him," he stated.

He also revealed he is open to working with directors from West Bengal. “Would love to work with "Sujoy Ghosh, Shoojit Sircar....I love their works."

On the professional front, the star was most recently seen in the blockbuster "Brahmastra," which grossed approximately Rs 431 crore worldwide. He will next be seen in the Luv Ranjan rom-com 'Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar,' in which he will co-star with Shraddha Kapoor. He will also be starring in Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s crime drama ‘Animal’.
