The President held a video conference with governors, lieutenant governors and administrators of various states and union territories to discuss ways of combating the pandemic. He emphasised that social distancing was a must and all efforts should be made to ensure it across the country.

The conference was a sequel to the interaction the President had with 15 governors on March 27. It was attended by Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu and governors, LGs and administrators of 21 states and union territories.

The President expressed unhappiness over attacks on doctors, health workers and police personnel in some parts of the country. He urged governors to ensure that nobody should stay hungry and all endeavors should be made to take care of the poor and destitute. Kovind said suggestions from previous conference were put into practice.

They included enrolling retired doctors and medical students, using expertise of psychologists, inviting youth to volunteer, daily review meetings, hunger helplines, encouraging home delivery, using stadia for relief work and quarantine and involving universities in spreading awareness.

“Our efforts so far have been in the right direction in battling the pandemic, notwithstanding some incidents,” Kovind said. He welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to people to light a candle, diya, torch or mobile flashlights in solidarity against the fight to end the pandemic.
