Synopsis

The new 'stupa' has 133 sculpted sandstone panels on its drum and dome- including one of BR Ambedkar embracing Buddhism-and a brass-coated mandapam with eight statues of the Buddha (made by some 1,200 artisans from Allagadda in Andhra Pradesh. The sprawling complex also has a Jatakavanam, a Dhyanavanam, a convention centre, hotels, auditoria, a Buddhist arts and crafts village and even a traditional Buddhist medicine centre.

Last week, Buddhavanam, a massive Buddhist-themed park developed by the Telangana government at Nagarjunasagar on the banks of the Krishna River was inaugurated by the state industries and IT minister, with the intention of attracting international tourists.
