Synopsis

The much-hyped Just Dial deal saw Reliance Industries buy a controlling stake for over INR5,700 crore in the company in 2021. Two years since, the stock has struggled to get past the deal price. The hyperlocal story seems to be unravelling with some new verticals closing down. While the management plays it down as a routine measure, difficult choices loom.

In July 2021, through its retail armReliance Retail Ventures (RRVL), Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) bought a controlling stake of over 67%in Just Dial through a combination of purchase of shares from founder VSS Mani, fresh capital infusion, and an open offer. Reliance paid around INR2,165 crore for the new shares in the local listing platform, over INR1,300 crore for Mani’s stake, and INR2,200 crore for the open offer. In all, the Mukesh
