As NTPC improves its ESG score, why it may be too early to celebrate. (Hint: think coal)

Synopsis

As per Morningstar Sustainalytics’ July ratings, the power producer's ESG score has improved from ‘severe’ to ‘high-risk’. NTPC had earlier chalked out a clear clean-energy road map and implemented a series of conservation initiatives. But the power giant has now gone back to burning coal to meet increased power demand, and this could impact its future sustainability score.

NTPC, the country’s largest public-sector power producer, has just got a pat on the back. Its ESG (environmental, social, and governance) rating has gone up one notch – from ‘severe’ to ‘high-risk’. The rating by Morningstar Sustainalytics, which reviews companies every year, is for the period ending July 2022.
