Synopsis

Startups like BharatPe were stars of India’s 100 unicorns story not too long ago. The sweet music ended as their ghosts of fractured corporate governance jumped out. But what makes it out for public consumption is perhaps just a fraction of what has taken place over the last five years. One wonders, where are we heading?

The punch bowl is gone. The lights are dim. The music has all but faded. The debris of decadence and hubris can now be seen strewn all around the startup dance floor. It is not a pretty sight. It started with the corporate governance fracas at BharatPe and Zilingo. GoMechanic soon followed. Now there is trouble at Rahul Yadav’s Info Edge-backed firm. Even storied and well-capitalised firms such as Byju’s have been reported for accounting issues.
