Synopsis

Even though the Indian auto industry was struggling with historically low sales last year, Renault India clocked 15.24% growth during April-December. Triber, Kwid with a facelift, and the upgraded Duster did the trick. But with Tata Motors and Kia readying similar products, maintaining the current momentum will be a big challenge for Renault.

As Carlos Ghosn, the ousted head of Nissan-Renault, was busy scripting a dramatic escape from house arrest in Tokyo, a company he had set up in India in 2008 was quietly tiptoeing back to strength. While the Indian auto industry was navigating the grungy lanes of historically low sales, Renault India was chomping on a 15.24% year-on-year growth in domestic sales during April-December last year.
