GSHSEB to roll out 'best of 2' initiative for HSC science students

GSHSEB to roll out 'best of 2' initiative for HSC science students
This initiative is currently exclusive to the HSC science stream
Ahmedabad: If you are unhappy with the marks you have scored in Class 12 science, don't be disheartened. The Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) has decided to offer you another chance to improve your score through a new initiative.
Here's how it works: If you're unhappy with your March 2024 exam results, you can appear for the supplementary exam to be held in June-July.
You can then choose to keep the "best of two" results. Board officials said that a formal announcement in this regard will be made shortly.
Whether you've failed in one, two, or all subjects, or even if you've cleared the exam but want better scores, this option is available to you.
GSHSEB vice-chairman Dinesh Patel explained, "This is a new experiment starting this year, available to regular students who took the March 2024 exams. Previously, students had to surrender their marksheets, so few opted for score improvement. From 2024, it will be the best of two exams."
He added that this system is like the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE), where the best scores from different sessions are considered for admission.
Best of Two scheme to benefit students who missed exams
This decision will benefit students who missed exams due to illness or other issues or whose performance was below expectations. Registration for the supplementary exam will begin soon.
For example, if student X scored 85 in physics, 80 in chemistry, and 60 in maths in March 2024 but is dissatisfied with the scores, he can choose to retake these subjects in June. Suppose he then scores 75 in physics, 23 in chemistry, and 85 in maths.

The board will use his best scores from both sets of exams, giving him 85 in physics, 80 in chemistry, and 85 in maths. In case X fails chemistry in June, his score from March will count. Previously, students had to give up their original marks to accept new ones, even if they performed poorly on the second attempt. With the "best of two" system, students can keep the higher score without surrendering the original mark sheet. GSHSEB will issue a special marksheet with the March and June exam results and calculate the final percentage based on the best scores.
This is currently exclusive to the HSC Science stream and aims to help students boost their scores and prospects of admission to professional courses such as engineering and pharmacy.
It will also aid those who narrowly missed eligibility requirements. Students who fail in one or two subjects will receive a single marksheet instead of two. The board will also issue a first/second attempt certificate to students who fail the March exam.
