BENGALURU: In a notification issued Saturday, the state govt announced its decision to issue one lakh new permits for green autos in the city over the next five years. Interestingly, the notification came just a day after the transport department impounded more than 100 bike-taxis, following aggressive protests by auto drivers.
According to the notification, Bengaluru has witnessed significant population growth, leading to various challenges associated with urbanisation and formation of new layouts.
“Due to a tremendous increase in the city’s floating population, demand for autorickshaw permits has increased. In view of this, and to control rising air and noise pollution in Bengaluru, it is necessary to introduce more LPG and CNG-run autorickshaws,” it stated. tnn
