BHOPAL: A 27-year-old newly married man murdered eight members of his family - including his bride, mother and sister - and died by suicide in a village in MP's Chhindwara district late Tuesday night. The victims were axed to death in their sleep.
There are three children among the dead. It's not known what triggered the horrific crime, but the accused, Dinesh, was mentally unstable, say police.
He was married barely eight days ago.

The lone survivor of Dinesh's killing spree is a 10-year-old child, who woke up to the noise and saw the murders. He was severely injured in the axe attack and has been referred to Nagpur, 210km away.
Police are camping in the village, Bodal Kachhar, deep in the forests of the Tamia valley, 215km from Bhopal and 90km from Chhindwara town. Dinesh had a history of mental issues, and the family may have fallen victim to the belief that marriage would somehow 'solve' it.
"He lost his mental balance a year ago but after treatment he became normal. We got him married on May 21 this year. But within a couple of days, he again developed psychological problems," Dinesh's uncle Talvi Singh Patel told TOI.

His bride, 23-year-old Varsha, was among the first to be killed. The joint family lived in a cluster of houses surrounding a courtyard. Due to the heat, most of them were all sleeping outdoors.
Around 2.30am on Wednesday, Dinesh picked up an axe and began hacking his family members in the neck as they slept, say police. None of them had a chance.
Apart from Varsha, Dinesh killed his mother, Siya Bai, 55, sister Parvati, 16, elder brother Sharvan and his wife Barato Bai, 30, and their children Deepa, 1.5, Sewanti, 4, and Krishna, 5.
Dinesh then turned to members of the extended family. Luckily for them, one of his aunts had woken up to use the toilet.
Dinesh’s uncle Talvi Singh Patel told TOI: “My sister-in-law saw him advancing with an axe and tried to snatch it from him. He wrenched himself free, and hacked at her 10-year-old grandson, Ishu. My sister-in-law then screamed for her son, Apatiya, who was sleeping inside. Dinesh got unnerved and ran away. We later found him hanging from a tree.”
Police are interviewing members of the family to understand Dinesh’s murder rampage. “Preliminary probe shows that the accused had some psychological issues. We received information around 3am and police teams rushed to the spot. The last rites of all the deceased were performed in the evening,” Chhindwara SP Manish Khatri told TOI.
