Bhubaneswar: For the first time MLA from Digapahandi, Sidhant Mohapatra cycled to the Odisha assembly to attend a 3-day special session here on Tuesday. Known for his passion for cycling, Mohapatra announced that he plans to continue riding his bicycle to the assembly every day.
Wearing a light blue cotton kurta-pajama and a white helmet, the actor-turned-politician drew attention when he entered the premises of the Odisha assembly at around 9.30am.
“My house is only one and a half kilometers away from the assembly. So, why bring a car that will cause pollution and traffic congestion when I can use a bicycle,” said the 57-year-old Mohapatra.
Mohapatra, who had earlier launched a campaign ‘Ride for Pride’ in 2018 to promote cycling, said, “Cycling is not just a hobby for me, but it’s a way of life. It promotes good health, reduces pollution, and eases traffic congestion. I want to encourage more people, especially in urban areas, to consider cycling as a viable mode of transport. Those having workplaces within a five-kilometer distance should consider commuting by bicycle,” he added, “There are several instances in foreign countries where leaders and statesmen use bicycling as an environmentally friendly means of transportation.”
Despite the sweltering heat and humidity, Mohapatra appeared unfazed. “It’s all about mental preparation and staying hydrated. Once you get into the rhythm, cycling becomes an enjoyable activity rather than a chore. As the weather condition is getting worse by the day, each of us must change our lifestyle and take up habits so that our future generation can have a healthy environment,” he shared with a smile.
Popular Odia film actor Mohapatra, a two-time BJD MP from the Berhampur Lok Sabha seat, joined the BJP ahead of the 2024 general elections and contested from the Digapahandi Assembly seat on a saffron party ticket and won. “I served as an MP twice, now elected as an MLA, and I wish to get elected as a sarpanch once,” he quipped.
On the first day of the special session, Mohapatra set an example for an environmentally friendly commitment to cycling. His efforts highlighted the importance of individual responsibility in adopting healthy practices and creating awareness about environmental issues through everyday actions that can contribute to significant positive change.
Earlier this month, BJP MP from Balasore, Pratap Chandra Sarangi, went to cast his vote on a bicycle.
