No heat relief, Abohar sizzles at 47.1°C
Bathinda: Severe heatwave conditions continued to persist in the region on Saturday as maximum temperature in most places of Punab and Haryana was recorded 6°C and more above normal.
The maximum in Punjab was recorded at 47.1°C in Abohar, followed by 46.7°C in Samrala. Maximum temperature in Haryana was recorded at 46.5°C in Nuh. It was followed by 46°C in Faridabad.
The day temperature in Chandigarh was recorded at 43.8°C.
There were strong winds too. In Pathankot, winds of speeds up to 54 kmph were reported during the last 24 hours. The wind speed in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar was 48 kmph, it was 42 kmph in Ropar, and 39 kmph in Faridkot. As per Indian Meteorological Department, heatwave conditions are likely to continue in the two states till June 18. Heatwave conditions are also expected in isolated pockets of Himachal Pradesh till June 17.
Deficient rain in June
As the southwest monsoon (June-September) has not entered north India states, Punjab has recorded 86% deficient rainfall during the June1-15 period, recording only 2.6mm rainfall. The figure should have been 18.2mm. Haryana has recorded 87% deficient rainfall, receiving just 2.3mm rainfall against a normal of 17.2mm during this period. Himachal Pradesh recorded 63% deficient rainfall, getting just 14.7mm rain against the normal of 39.5mm rainfall. TNN
