CHENNAI: The number of annual gram sabhas have been increased from four to six this year, and the first gram sabha will be held on March 22, world water day, chief secretary V Irai Anbu has said.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the chief secretary said that this year, the focus of the Jal Sakthi movement is 'source of sustainability of drinking water'.
The gram sabha to be held on Wednesday will discuss water management, wastage prevention, reducing use of water and establishing rainwater harvesting structures in all houses.
Creating new water sources, identifying existing resources and rejuvenating them, social forestry and other schemes will be discussed at the meeting. The year 2023 has been declared as the International year of millets, hence encouraging farmers to take up millet cultivation which uses less water will also be discussed. The audit of village panchayat and MGNREGS among others will be discussed.
Now, the conduct of the gram sabhas will be monitored at the district and state level with the help of the Namma Gram Sabha app. Number of participants, important resolutions, and photographs will be uploaded on the app. Hence, he has urged the people to participate in the gram sabhas in large numbers.
