CHENNAI: A 21-year-old man sleeping on the pavement at Besant Nagar was fatally run over by Beeda Madhuri, daughter of YSR Congress Rajya Sabha MP Beeda Masthan Rao, early on Tuesday. Madhuri was arrested but released on bail as police confirmed she was not drunk.
Police said the victim, Surya, a resident of Urur Kuppam, Besant Nagar, had an argument with his wife on Monday night, got drunk and went to sleep on a pavement near Tiger Varadachari Salai, about two km from his home.
Concerned for his safety, Vanitha went looking for him and found him asleep on the road.
MP's daughter traced using CCTV camera footage, arrested
While she stepped aside to call relatives for help, a high-end car turned on to Tiger Varadachari Road and ran over her husband, killing him instantly.
The car, driven by Beeda Madhuri, stopped briefly, and she and her friend approached the scene. They alerted an ambulance but left as local residents began to gather. Surya was taken to Govt Royapettah Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Residents of Urur Kuppam gathered at the police station, demanding the arrest of the car driver. Using CCTV camera footage, police traced the car to Madhuri's friend's house in Besant Nagar. Madhuri was subsequently charged with causing death due to negligence.
