GUWAHATI: The relentless and torrential downpour in Arunachal Pradesh over the past 24 hours has severely aggravated the flood situation in the downstream regions of Assam. Catastrophic lightning strikes in Cachar and South Salmara Mankachar districts have claimed the lives of two persons and left three others gravely wounded.

In Assam’s South Salmara Mankachar district, a person died when lightning struck a group attending a janaja in the Salkata area on Saturday. The deceased has been identified as Ilias Ansari (28).

Three other injured individuals have been transported to Goalpara district in critical condition, as reported by locals.

In another incident in Cachar district, a person, identified as Baharuddin (32), tragically lost his life when lightning struck as he went fishing in a wetland in Jagdishpur, Katigorah, on Friday evening. Locals reported that he collapsed in a waterbody after the lightning strike, and his body was recovered two hours later.

Meanwhile, the Brahmaputra river and its tributaries in upper Assam are exhibiting a resurgent trend, even as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issues a red alert for several districts of Arunachal Pradesh.
