IIT Kharagpur student death: Faizan Ahmed's mother alleges planned murder, seeks justice
DIBRUGARH: Amid reports that gunshot and stab wounds were found on the neck of deceased IIT Kharagpur student Faizan Ahmed during a second post mortem examination, his mother Rehana Ahmed on Saturday alleged that her son’s death was a case of “planned murder” and accused the institution of trying to cover up the crime.
Rehana, speaking to reporters at her home in Assam’s Tinsukia town, claimed that the second post mortem report prepared by forensic expert Dr AK Gupta vindicated her claim that her son was a victim of murder, which she has been alleging since the beginning.
She pointed out that the report mentioned a gunshot wound below Faizan’s ear and dagger marks on his neck, indicating that he was brutally murdered.
“My son was mercilessly murdered and IIT Kharagpur is involved in it. Since the beginning, they have been fighting against me with a battery of lawyers. They tried to conceal the crime by saying my son died by suicide,” Rehana said.
She also appealed to CM Himanta Biswa Sarma to help her get justice for her deceased son. “I appeal to CM Himanta Biswa Sarma to help an unfortunate mother and provide justice to my son. My son was a good person. Why was he murdered? What wrong did he commit? There might be some big mystery behind his death. We are not satisfied with the investigation of the SIT. The court has directed them to treat my son's death as a case of murder,” she said.
Faizan, a 23-year-old third-year mechanical engineering student at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, was found dead in his hostel room on October 14, 2022.
The initial investigation by the authorities had suggested that the young student had died by suicide. However, Rehana has insisted that her son’s death was a case of “murder” and not suicide.
The report of the second autopsy had stated that blood was detected on the nails and hair strands of the victim, further corroborating the claims of foul play. It is worth noting that the wounds found by the forensic expert were not documented by the police during the initial investigation, nor were they filmed during the first autopsy conducted in October 2022.
The revelation comes after Faizan’s mother, Rehana, moved the Calcutta high court to seek the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate his death, following which the court, in May 2023, ordered the exhumation of his body and a second post mortem examination. The body was exhumed from a burial ground in Dibrugarh on May 23, 2023.
