T MLCs’ chances to bag ministerial berth ‘slim’
Hyderabad: Except the two seats under Governor’s quota, there is no vacancy in the Telangana Legislative Council up to March 29, 2025, as a result of which all those aspiring to for a berth in the state cabinet via the upper house of the legislature have slim chances or hope for the CM to reserve one or two cabinet berths for MLCs to be filled up after three months.

The aspirants have been waiting eagerly for a cabinet expansion as it has been over six months that the Congress govt came into office with A Revanth Reddy and others being sworn in as the chief minister and ministers on December 7, 2023. There are 6 vacancies in state cabinet.
Now, the CM is under tremendous pressure to expand the cabinet and after his recent visit to Delhi where the cabinet expansion plans were discussed by him with AICC top leaders. The talk in the party circles is that Revanth may go for a sort of mini cabinet expansion by filling up three to four berths in the first or second week of July.
While the MLAs in the race for a cabinet berth are keeping their fingers crossed over who will be inducted, those who lost the assembly elections and other senior leaders aspiring to be among the council of ministers of Revanth have to wait for at least three months as nearest term of office completion of about council members is March 29, 2025.
As per the norms, a candidate who is inducted into the cabinet, must get elected to the assembly or the council, or get nominated to the upper house, within six months from the date of election.
However, in case of a MLA or MLC resigning to his or her post, party leaders stand a chance of making it to the cabinet in the proposed expansion within a fortnight.
The members who will complete their term of office in the council on March 29, 2025 are Mahmood Ali, Satyavathi Rathod, Seri Subhash Reddy and Yegge Mallesham, all from the BRS and were elected under the MLA quota. While, Mirza Riyaz ul Affendi of AIMIM was elected under MLA quota with the support of the BRS.

T Jeevan Reddy of the Congress was elected from Karimnagar-Adilabad-Nizamabad-Medak graduates’ constituency. Alugubelli Narsi Reddy was elected from Warangal-Khammam-Nalgonda Teachers’ constituency. He was supported by Telangana State United Teachers Federation (TS-UTF) and the Left parties. The next nearest member to complete his term is BRS candidate MS Prabhakar Rao who was elected for the MLC seat under Hyderabad Local Bodies constituency. His term is up to May 2, 2025.
