NIMS doc kills self with lethal dose of anaesthesia
Hyderabad: A doctor working in the department of anaesthesia at the Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) died by suicide at her apartment in Begumpet on Friday night. Police officers believe that she may have injected herself with a lethal dose of anaesthesia.
Police said Dr Prachikar Kumar, 46, was found dead by her husband and neighbours. The motive behind the suspected suicide was not clear as Prachikar did not leave behind a suicide note.
Prachikar was not responding to calls from friends and family on Friday evening.
Suspecting something was amiss, her husband, Dr Deepak Kumar, a doctor with a private hospital, rushed to their Begumpet flat, and found the door locked from inside.
He forced the door open with help from neighbours and found his wife lying unconscious on a bed, with a syringe lying next to her. There was also an empty 10 mg ampoule of vecuronium bromide, used as a muscle relaxant as part of general anaesthesia in surgeries.
Sources said the family had shifted out of their flat at Begumpet to a new apartment at Moosapet, about a month ago. It was not clear why Prachikar had gone to the old flat. Initial probe revealed she had reported to work at NIMS on Friday.
Her husband and the neighbours shifted her to the NIMS hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival. A case of suspicious death has been registered under section 194 of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). Officials said the postmortem report will provide more details on the cause of the death.
