Woman home guard assaulted and molested in parking row in Kolkata
Nawab Abdul Latif Street, where the cop was assaulted on Monday
KOLKATA: A woman Kolkata Police home guard was allegedly verbally abused, molested and even beaten up after she reportedly tried to stop a two-wheeler owner from parking illegally in a lane located close to Alimuddin Street under the Park Street police station. The incident was reported on Monday afternoon from Nawab Abdul Latif Street. The accused has been arrested.
According to police sources, the home guard posted with the local guard saw the accused, Samir Hussain, parking his scooterette on the side of the narrow lane.
As the home guard objected, an argument ensued.
“In her complaint, the KP cop claimed she was restrained, leading to the cop trying to free herself. As fist fighting began, the accused, Hussain, suddenly hit her. All along, the female cop was verbally abused. She was also allegedly molested before Hussain tried to flee. However, with the help of locals and cops from the Park Street police station, the accused was caught. He was produced in a court and sent to judicial custody till June 26. Multiple IPC sections pertaining to deterring a public servant from carrying out duty, hurt and molestation have been registered. Further probe is on,” said an investigating officer.
Confirming the incident, DC (south) Priyobrata Roy said they were collecting CCTV footage to bolster the case. “The arrest was carried out to send across a strong signal,” said Roy.
While cops getting assaulted in central Kolkata is no longer a standalone incident, this was the first time that a woman cop was attacked.
“It takes several minutes to pass a stretch here that could have been crossed in half the time. Two-wheelers are parked and the road space gets shrunk,” said Sadia Rehman, a local resident.
