BMC has finished boring a 9.7km water tunnel from Amar Mahal to Parel via Wadala, making Mumbai only the second city in the world after New York to have 100km of water supply tunnels.

  • 169km Length of Delaware aqueduct tunnel, part of the system that supplies water to New York City
  • 100km Total length of Mumbai’s water supply tunnels

Project’s aims

Sufficient water supply at high pressure for 2 wards and parts of 2 more till 2061:
  • F-North (Matunga-Wadala area)
  • F-South (Parel)
  • E (Byculla)
  • L (Kurla)

The tunnel

  • Depth 100-110 metres

  • Diameter 3.2 metres: External (excavated diameter) 2.5 metres: Internal (because of protective concrete lining)

A few more kms to be added

  • 74% of Mumbai’s water tunnel project stands completed

  • April 2026 Deadline The TBM that was used for boring the tunnel *Parts of these wards 90km Operational tunnel

  • 3 Number of supply shafts. Locations: Hedgewar Garden (109 metres depth), Pratiksha Nagar (103 metres), Parel (101 metres)

  • 9.7km Latest addition

  • A BMC official said that once finished, the project will encompass a cumulative tunnel length of well over 100km
