Businessman who cheated 146 investors of ₹18cr held
Mumbai: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Mumbai Police on Thursday arrested Venkataramanan Gopalan (56), the proprietor of GVR Exports and Imports Company, who allegedly cheated more than 146 people after collectinh Rs 17.94 crore from them on the promise of earning 8 to 10% interest on their investments.
Police said that Gopalan, who was on run after an FIR was registered against him last year, was arrested from a hotel in Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh.
Sources said that unit 14 of the EOW led by police inspector Sanjay Lodhe arrested Gopalan after laying a trap and brought him to Mumbai on atransit remand. He was remanded to police custody till July 11.
The complaint in the case was filed last July by Dr Rajeev Sharma, a gynaecologist, who had contacted Gopalan after seeing an advertisement in the newspaper of G V R Exports and Imports Company offering good returns to investors. —S Ahmed Ali
