Noida: Four persons were arrested on Saturday for allegedly stealing personal data to purchase SIM cards and fradulently open bank accounts. The accused would later resell the SIM cards at higher prices on Telegram.
Seventy SIM cards, 43 empty SIM boxes and various IDs were recovered from the accused.
The accused—Faizal alias Faizi alias Daante (24) , Jani alias Akshat Kumar (29), Vishesh Saini alias Vishwas alias Sundar (28), and Gaurav Kumar (23) — told cops they obtained fake SIM cards and created counterfeit bank accounts with their accomplice, Hani, in Delhi.
They allegedly stole the identities of drug addicts, rickshaw pullers, and other individuals they encountered in Noida by obtaining their biometric data, ACP Ravi Kumar Singh.
Gaurav, a BTech graduate, would sell these SIM cards to cybercriminals. They sold each SIM for Rs 400-500, while bank accounts fetched Rs10,000-15,000 each. They also converted cryptocurrency earned by their associates into money through WhatsApp, the ACP added.
