Girder of under construction bridge collapses in Jharkhand
BOKARO: Girder of an under-construction bridge over Arga river at Bhelwaghati in Jharkhand's Giridih district, around 235km from Ranchi on Bihar border, collapsed late on Saturday night owing to incessant rain, reported.
In neighbouring Bihar, a bridge collapsed on Friday in Madhubani due to heavy rain, making it the fifth such incident in nine days. Another had collapsed in Kishanganj on Thursday.
The bridge in Jharkhand was being constructed on Fatehpur-Bhelwaghati road to connect Dumritola and Karipahri villages.
Residents said water level in the river rose significantly following downpour on Saturday and strong currents resulted in the girder breaking apart. Also, one of the pillars got bent.
Road construction department executive engineer Vinay Kumar said the incident was triggered by heavy rain.
The bridge was being built at an estimated cost of Rs 5.5 crore, an official said.
