THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Poojappura police have arrested a Tamil Nadu native under Pocso for sexually assaulting a three-year-old boy.

Kanyakumari native Marikani, 36, who is doing batter business in the state capital has been remanded after being produced before a court.

Police said the accused has been a friend of the survivor's father, who is also a Tamil Nadu native, and he used to visit his house.

On April 29, he offered chocolates to the child who was playing in the courtyard and took him out on his bike with the consent of parents.

After giving chocolates around 500 metres away, the child was subjected to unnatural sex and was dropped back after an hour, the police said.

The child complained of pain in his private parts the next day and was taken to a hospital. On examining him, doctors informed parents that he was sexually assaulted by someone.

During counselling, the child disclosed what had happened and soon the child line and police were alerted.

The accused was nabbed from his house soon on parents' complaint.

Despite the awareness drives and stringent legal measures, sexual attacks on children are on the rise in the state capital, reveals data on Pocso cases.

The State Crime Records Bureau data shows that from 358 cases registered under Pocso in the year 2020, the figure rose to 601 in 2023.

The cases registered were 436 in 2021 and over 500 in 2022.
