Starting your own kitchen garden is a fulfilling experience. When you grow your own vegetables and herbs, it will make sure that you always have a supply of fresh, homegrown produce. So, if you were looking for a sign, here are 10 steps to make the perfect kitchen garden.

First things first, make sure that your kitchen is spacious enough to house and grow a kitchen garden. A cosy spot beside the windows which gets some amount of sunlight would be best.

Once you are sure that your kitchen has enough space, the next step would be to select the right spot. Look for an area that will get ample amount of sunlight and it won't be a hindrance in your daily cooking.

Decide what you want to grow and how much space each plant will need. For example, mint spreads a lot so it will need more space than a cherry tomato plant. So, plan right.

Next up is deciding the soil. One thing to keep in mind is that soil produces and attracts insects (just like the plant), so make sure to get a soil that isn’t too loamy or dry, and will not spoil your kitchen.

Once everything else is done, now head to the local nursery and pick out the plants. As it is your first time, go for plants like mint, veggies like tomatoes, and herbs like basil.

If you’re new to gardening, it’s best to start small. Don’t dig out all the space to add pots and containers, rather, choose maybe half of the space available and then expand once the plants start growing.

Timing is important in gardening. Plant the seeds or add the cuttings according to the time and season. Make sure to ask the local gardener which herbs are evergreen and which will grow in certain seasons.

Once the seeds or cuttings are placed inside, next comes the watering. Initially, water the plants with normal water without any additions. But once the leaves and stems start to grow, start spraying water like rice water, banana peel water, etc.

No matter where the garden is, it needs some form of mulching. As it is a small kitchen garden, organic mulch like wood chips, leaves, and the likes will be best to use.

Regularly check your garden for signs of pests and diseases. Remove any weeds as they compete with the plants for resources. Prune or thin out plants as needed to ensure proper air and growth. Soon, the plants will be ready to harvest and enjoy.
