Over 500 families residing in several colonies near hasmathpet lake antipate a flood-like situation this year too. The residents say that despite last year’s floods, the engineering wing of the Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) has not rebuilt the retaining walls to prevent flooding of nearby areas.

As the heavy downpour continued on second day on Thursday, over 20 residential colonies abutting the decades-old water bodies like Ramannakunta Lake, Trimulgherry Lake and hasmathpet lake, are facing threat of inundation. In fact, hundreds of families, staying near these lakes have been under threat of flooding for years.

Bon Cheruvu, popularly known as hasmathpet lake, which was once the largest flood-regulating water body in Secunderabad, now falls prey to encroachments and pollution.

The desilting works at Ramannakunta lake and other major nalas in Secunderabad Cantonment have begun, following a recent TOI report.

The monsoon is round the corner, but works pertaining to desilting of several nalas in the Secunderabad Cantonment limits are incomplete. Desilting works in Vasavi Nagar, New Vasavi Nagar sector-B, Jyothi Colony, Jupiter Colony, Brook Bond Colony, Gruhalaxmi Colony, New SBH Colony and several other colonies in SCB ward number V are progressing at a snail’s pace.

One month on, memories of the flood continue to haunt those living around the centuries-old hasmathpet lake in Secunderabad Cantonment. Even now, their cellars and walls bear the water mark, indicating just how high the levels rose — about six to eight feet — as sewage water gushed into their houses, soon after the downpour.

Over 20 residential colonies in Secunderabad are facing flood threats as water levels in Ramannakunta lake and hasmathpet lake were rising dangerously, officials said. Many by-lanes in Sitarampur area near Ramannakunta lake at Bowenpally in Secunderabad Cantonment reported heavy water logging.

Life has not bounced back to normal after the rains for several residents in Secunderabad. The broken retaining wall of nalas through which water from Ramannakunta Lake in Bowenpally and hasmathpet lake in Secunderabad have been gushing out are yet to be repaired.

Environmentalists on Monday said idol immersions have turned water quality in city lakes from bad to worse.

Water quality of rivers in Telangana are as bad as the lakes in Hyderabad. While Musi is highly polluted the Telangana State, Pollution Control Board latest data revealed that River Godavari and River Krishna have total and faecal coliform bacteria alarmingly. Coliform bacteria that indicates mixing of sewerage and faecal matter into the rivers is also seen in Manjeera too. PCB monitors river quality continuously.
