The Godavari Marathwada Irrigation Development Corporation (GMIDC) on October 30 ordered the release 8.6 thousand million cubic feet water from the upstream areas towards jayakwadi dam. On Monday, in a show of unity, different political leaders, farmers and water rights activists blocked the road in front of the GMIDC office in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and closed one lane of the busy Jalna Road for nearly six hours till 5.30 pm despite large police presence.

The Bombay high court’s Aurangabad bench has taken suo motu cognisance of the TOI report and converted it into a PIL to be heard on September 4. In a double-booster, officials from the state education department have reached out to the villagers to work out a solution. The residents described it as the first such initiative ever.

While the state government has mentioned a solar power plant, using floating panels, at the jayakwadi major irrigation project in the annual budget, the experts, as well as nature lovers, have vehemently opposed the plan.

A total of 113 migratory birds of 37 different species have been ringed at jayakwadi bird sanctuary during the current migratory season.
