A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 struck near the central coast of Peru on Friday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). A tsunami warning was also issued but later it was stated that the threat has passed.
The epicenter was located 8.8 kilometers (5.5 miles) from Atiquipa district.
The Prime Minister of Peru announced that, based on initial assessments, there have been no reported fatalities resulting from the seismic activity.
The quake was felt in the neighbouring areas of Ayacucho, Ica, and the capital, according to local media.
Although the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre initially stated that there was no threat of a tsunami, they later issued warning that waves of "1 to 3 metres above tide level" are possible, reported AFP. Although later, it said that, "There is no longer a tsunami threat from this earthquake."
